The Campus Recreation Department positions are designed to give students tools and training for a lifetime of success, both personally and professionally.

The Campus Recreation Department is looking for friendly, self-sufficient individuals who will promote the health of its members. This individual should work cooperatively alongside other staff members and be willing to perform multiple job responsibilities. Duties of Campus Recreation staff may include, but are not limited to, providing information about the facility, selling memberships and activity classes, resolving member conflicts and performing specific cleaning duties.

Promoting safety and cleanliness is an important goal for the Campus Recreation staff. We seek to provide a positive environment and have friendly interactions with the users. Candidates should have a great work ethic and be adaptable to the Campus Recreation environment.

Learning Goals

As a result of working within the Campus Recreation Department student employees will:

  • Demonstrate creative thinking and resolution emphasizing safety and risk management.
  • Exhibit transferable skills that can assist in their future employment.

Group and Aquatic Fitness Instructor

Lifeguards and Water Safety Instructors

Lifeguards
Current certification in American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguard Training is required to be hired. It is the responsibility of candidate to find, attends, pass and pay for the certification course.

Climbing and Guest Service Specialist
After being selected through the interview process and prior to the end of new candidate training both positions are required to have a current certification in American Red Cross CPR/AED PRO, which is offered during new candidate training. It is the responsibility of candidate to attends, pass and pay for the certification course offered by Campus Recreation during new candidate training.

Interviews

If selected for an interview you will be notified by phone or email of your interview time. All interviews will be held at the Peter Courtney Health and Wellness Center and will last up to 30-minutes, plan accordingly. Please come prepared and dressed for a professional interview. Please note that priority will go to Western Oregon University students. Campus Recreation will conduct a criminal background check for all positions through the Office of Human Resources at Western Oregon University. New Candidate Training

If selected for a position with the Campus Recreation Department there is a 6-week training period. During that period new candidates normally receive 2-4 paid hours scheduled training time per week. After completion of the training period requirements, current required certification(s) and acceptable evaluation score from the Facility Supervisors new candidates can substitute into work shifts that are available for the remainder of the term.
