The Geography and Planning Department offers programs that bridge the physical and social sciences, combing the theoretical with practical experience. Students gain knowledge that can be applied to societal and environmental problems and to future planning. Departmental programs prepare the student for the post-graduation job market as well as for advanced educational opportunities.
We pride ourselves in welcoming students from a variety of original interests and a range of abilities and in helping majors develop focus and skills. We have close to 100 percent retention and graduation of majors. Almost all have professional jobs within months of graduation, if not prior.
A student that declares a major in the first or second year of college can graduate in four years. Those four years may include an internship or other professional experience.
Students who desire graduate school will wish to know that 100 percent of WCU geography majors that have applied to graduate schools in the past decade have been accepted, most with full financial support for that graduate work. Some of those students entered WCU through its Academic Development Program, and developed aspirations toward graduate degrees only after becoming a Geography major.
Students also may with so know that we have an active Geography Club, signifigant community outreach and service opportunities, and a chapter of the international honorary society for Geography. Recent alumni network with each other and usually stay in touch with the department.
The Department of Geography offers courses at Graduate and Undergraduate levels.
