11 WNC HIGH SCHOOLS TO COMPETE
IN THEATRE FESTIVAL AT WCU OCT. 27-28

Approximately 200 students from 11 Western North Carolina high schools will hit the stage at Western Carolina University during regional competition for the 2006 North Carolina Theatre Conference High School Play Festival.

Scheduled for Friday, Oct. 27, and Saturday, Oct. 28, in WCU's Fine and Performing Arts Center, the event will give theatre students from across the region a chance to be judged on their performance of either a one-act play or an excerpt from a full-length play lasting no more than 45 minutes.

“This is a great opportunity for both the university and the high schools attending,” said Peter Savage, an instructor in WCU's department of communication, theatre and dance who is coordinating this year's festival for the western region.

High schools scheduled to take part in the festival are Ashbrook, Enka, Fred T. Foard, Freedom, Hendersonville, Mountain Heritage, North Henderson, Polk, Shelby, South Caldwell and South Iredell.

Western Carolina is one of eight sites that will be hosting regional competition for the statewide theatre festival. High schools that excel at the regional events will advance to compete at the state level during the NCTC Fall Theatre Gathering on Thursday, Nov. 16, and Friday, Nov. 17.

The annual festival is designed to foster collaboration, cooperation and communication among theatre arts programs and to provide a supportive and nurturing atmosphere in which young artists explore the world of theatre.

“Future college students from all over the western part of the state will be coming to Cullowhee and seeing all that WCU has to offer. Parents, family and friends of students entered in the competition are encouraged to come and attend the festival. It's a great chance to see the up-and-coming talent in WNC, as well as to see our new facilities,” said Savage.

The North Carolina Theatre Conference was formed in 1970 and provides service, leadership and advocacy for North Carolina's theatre community. NCTC has sponsored the North Carolina 's High School and Middle School Play festivals for more 20 years and has been the sole sponsor of the NCTC High School Play Festival since 2001.

The regional festival at WCU is open to the general public, and admission is free. For more information, contact Peter Savage at (828) 227-2092 or visit www.nctc.org .
