WRITER, FILM PRODUCER TO KICK OFF
FALL FOLK LIFE SERIES AT WCU

The “Telling Mountain Stories” fall folk life series will begin at Western Carolina University on Tuesday, Oct. 10, with a presentation by author and film producer Cecelia Conway.

Conway, professor of English at Appalachian State University, is the author of “African Banjo Echoes in Appalachia: A Study of Folk Traditions” and co-produced the film “Sprout Wings and Fly: A Portrait of Fiddler Tommy Jarrell.”

During the presentation, Conway will show and discuss her film about Jarrell and introduce clips from a work-in-progress focusing on African-American banjoist Rufus Kasey.

The program will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the auditorium of WCU's Mountain Heritage Center. The museum is joining with Philip Coyle of WCU's ethnography laboratory and Tom Hatley, Sequoyah Distinguished Professor in Cherokee Studies, in presenting the series.

The Mountain Heritage Center is located on the ground floor of WCU's H.F. Robinson Administration Building. For more information, call (828) 227-7129 or visit www.wcu.edu/mhc on the Web.
