Clarinetist Michael Lowenstern will present a master class and a recital Oct. 30-31 at Western Carolina University as part of the Catamount Concert Series.

The master class, which will feature WCU music majors, will take place Monday, Oct. 30, in Room 357 of the Coulter Building at 2:30 p.m. The recital will take place Tuesday, Oct. 31, in the Coulter recital hall at 8 p.m. Both programs are free and open to the public.

Lowenstein has performed, recorded and toured as a soloist and with ensembles, as a clarinetist and bass clarinetist. He can be heard on more than 40 recordings, including the solo recordings “Spasm” and “Ten Children,” which was named a “parenting pick” in Parenting magazine in 2004.

“Lowenstein is a cutting-edge composer and innovator in combining music technology with acoustic music, and also is known as the pre-eminent bass clarinetist of his generation,” said Shannon Thompson , WCU associate professor of music. “His energetic performances and original music are appealing to audiences of all ages.”

The performance is presented by the WCU Visiting Scholar Program, the Jackson County Arts Council and the WCU music department.
