NEWLY ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP

Misty Eller of Weaverville is the first recipient of a scholarship from a newly endowed fund for communication sciences and disorders students at Western Carolina University that was established in honor of former faculty member Yvonne Saddler Nielsen.

Eller was recommended for the scholarship by the faculty of the communication sciences and disorders department. She will receive an award of $450.

Eller, a WCU graduate student studying communication sciences and disorders, graduated from North Buncombe High School in 2001. Her parents are Bill and Debra Eller.

Nielsen retired from WCU in 1998 after 25 years of service, and received professor emeritus status in 2001. During her tenure, she served as an academic and personal adviser, teacher and clinical supervisor. She was adviser to WCU's chapter of the National Student Speech Language Hearing Association, coordinator for recruitment and clinical internships across North Carolina and other states, and a member of the N.C. Speech Hearing and Language Association. In addition to setting up the scholarship fund, the WCU department of communication sciences and disorders established a student service award to be given in Nielsen's name every year.
