WCU TO HOST TEACHERS' SEMINAR
EXAMINING EAST ASIA ART, CULTURE
Western Carolina University will host a seminar designed to provide North Carolina teachers with greater understanding of eastern Asia and enhance classroom instruction on the nations of China, Japan, Korea and Vietnam.
The 30-hour seminar is sponsored by the North Carolina Teaching Asia Network, a project of the Freeman Foundation and the National Consortium for Teaching about Asia, with the assistance of the K-12 International Outreach Program of International Programs and Services Office at Western.
An orientation session will be held at WCU on Saturday, Aug. 12, with three teacher workshops to be held on selected Saturdays through December on the Cullowhee campus.
Workshop topics will include the historical beginnings of the people of eastern Asia, Chinese civilization and artistic expressions, Japanese art styles, Korean culture, Vietnamese literature and folktales, musical styles, dance, theater, and significant social ceremonies in Asia.
Each participating teacher will receive a $500 stipend for attending, plus $200 in workshop materials, including art supplies. Upon completion of the four workshops, teachers will be awarded certificates and will be given $300 for school library purchases.
Orientation is scheduled from 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. Aug. 12 in Madison Hall at Western. Lunch and parking will be provided.
