MP3 players let you take your favorite music with you, and advanced models like the Apple iPod touch will also play videos and games and function as touchscreen computers. When deciding on an MP3 player, consider what you'll be storing on the player and how you plan to use it.
Before choosing an MP3 player, think about the types of files you'll be storing — whether music, video, photos, documents or audio books — and choose a player that supports them all. And make sure that it has enough storage space for the number and type of files you'll be storing (the most common storage capacities are 8 GB, 16 GB, 32 GB and 64 GB). Some models have an SD card slot that allows you expand your storage capacity.
If you'll be listening to your MP3 player at the gym or while running errands, you may want to look for a smaller, less bulky model with controls that are simple to use while moving. (You may also want to invest in an armband.) If you'll be listening mainly at home or in the office, you may prefer a larger model with a touchscreen.
While you're shopping, consider the MP3 player accessories you may need. Some accessories, like earbuds, wall chargers and USB cords, come standard with most players, while others have to be purchased separately. In particular, you may want to consider a docking station, headphones, a portable speaker, a car charger and a protective case.
