Where Are All the Books?

Due to the renovation of the Circulation floor (top floor) of the library, the majority of the library’s print books have been put into storage.  But don’t worry— the entire circulating collection of books will be back in place on the top floor when the renovation is complete later this year!

In the meantime, there are several options for books to support your students' research:

  • Use the “Core Collection”

A small collection of books (approximately 1000 volumes) is available for checkout.  These books can be checked out for a two-week period.  Go to the Circulation Department on the library’s main floor to access this collection.

  • Use our eBooks

The library’s extensive eBook collection (over 40,000 e-Books) is still available during the renovation.  Students can access eBooks from off-campus locations by using their MyVWCC username and password.

  • Use Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary loan (ILL) is an option for students who require print books for academic work. It usually takes 5-10 business days for books to arrive. Please keep this time frame in mind when making an ILL request.

Brown Library staff members are glad to help you with all of your information needs. Ask a Librarian!

News From Brown Library

GOOD NEWS:  The library’s top floor is being renovated!

BAD NEWS:  We have to close the top floor and send most of our books to storage.

GOOD NEWS:  Resources and services will still be available on the library’s main floor!

Starting on Monday, December 3rd, all library staff members will be working on the main floor, providing the resources and services to support your information needs.  The majority of our traditional print books will be stored, but we still have an extensive electronic book collection of over 40,000 academic titles.  We also have free interlibrary loan service that allows you to get academic books and articles from other libraries.

Call us (857-7303), visit our website, or even better, come visit us in person.  We’re here to help you.

iPads Temporarily Unavailable for Check-Out

Brown Library's collection of 20 iPads are being updated and will be temporarily unavailable for check-out this week. A few new apps will be downloaded to them, including the newest versions of Blackboard Mobile, Blackboard Collaborate, and Khan Academy. The iPads will become available again during the week of October 22.

What? You have iPads??

Yes! Once the updates are complete, current students only (and faculty and staff) are welcome to check out an iPad for two hours at a time, to be used within the library. Close to 200 apps are currently loaded and ready to go, including Blackboard, math and science video tutorials, a medical abbreviations app, Art Authority (with over 55,000 different paintings and sculptures), Evernote, Adobe Photoshop Express, The White House’s official app, Living Language (in Spanish, French, German, Italian, and Chinese), multiple eReaders, and shortcuts to both Virginia Western’s and the library’s websites. These are just a few of the incredible apps we have available.

For more information on how to check out an iPad, ask us at the Reference or Circulation desks, or take a look at our Technology Circulation page. We look forward to seeing you soon!
