U.Va to Peddle Bikes for Students, and Make It Safer to Ride Them

U.Va.'s Department of Parking and Transportation has added shared lane markings for bicyclists on a heavily traveled section of Alderman Road and is opening the new academic year with an on-Grounds bicycle sale on Aug. 22. University Assists Cyclists with Do-It-Yourself Repair Station

The Department of Parking and Transportation has installed a Dero Bike Fix-It station in front of Clark Hall, which houses the Department of Environmental Sciences. The station consists of a variety of tools, such as wrenches and screwdrivers, tethered with woven steel cables to a metal stanchion bolted to the sidewalk, plus a hand-operated air pump. Cyclists can hang their bikes on the stanchion and use the tools to make repairs. Read More...

McDonnell Encourages Sustainability Efforts

Gov. Bob McDonnell announced Friday the Virginia Transportation Challenge, an initiative encouraging Virginians to use an alternate form of transportation at least once every two weeks.

“We know from a health perspective that using an alternate form of transportation can cause less stress,” McDonnell spokesperson Jeff Caldwell said. “Depending on the type of alternate form, if you’re walking or riding a bike to work, it can be a healthier experience for you.” Read More...

University of Virginia Sets Earth Week Observances

Earth Week 2011 will be the liveliest observance yet at the University of Virginia, with presentations, exhibits, classes, food and music from April 18 to 22.

"Earth Week is a collaborative effort between students and U.Va. to provide an opportunity for education and celebration around sustainability," said Nina Morris, sustainability outreach coordinator in Facilities Management. Occasional Parking Program

Occasional Parking Programs

Those who normally bike or walk to their class or workplace, can now purchase Occasional Parking Permits to allow them to use their vehicle when they are unable to bike or walk (i.e. bad weather days, running late, etc.). The program is open to all U.Va faculty, staff, and students other than First Year students.

U.Va Upgrades Incentives for Car Pooling

Under a new plan, which takes effect on July 1, two-person car pools will receive a 25 percent discount on parking permits, up from 10 percent, and three-person car pools will receive a 40 percent discount on parking fees, up from 25 percent. Four-person car pools will continue to park for free. To receive benefits, car poolers need to be enrolled in the University's Cavpool program.

Sustainability Report Card: Transportation Receives A

Parking and Transportation Receives "A" Rating on the 2010 College Sustainability Report Card

The College Sustainability Report Card is designed to identify colleges and universities that are leading by example in their commitment to sustainability. The aim is to provide accessible information for schools to learn from one another's experiences, enabling them to establish more effective sustainability policies.

The University of Virginia was rated as a Campus Sustainability Leader, achieving an overall rating of B-. The Department of Parking and Transportation again received an "A" rating for the second consecutive year.
