The 3rd Annual Chancellor’s
Developmental Education Institute
Berry Hill Resort and Conference Center
3105 River Road
South Boston, VA 24592
June 2-7, 2013
Background
The VCCS is excited to announce the 3rd Annual Chancellor’s Developmental Education Institute, a one-of-a-kind professional development opportunity for developmental education faculty and student services leaders. In partnership with the leadership at the National Center for Developmental Education, Dr. Hunter Boylan and his staff, the VCCS will hold an annual one-week summer institute for developmental education faculty and student services leaders. We are fortunate to have the national experts in developmental education committed to provide support to the developmental education efforts in Virginia.
The focus of the Chancellor’s Developmental Education Institute is on the integration of academic and student services in support of student success in developmental mathematics and English. The Chancellor’s Developmental Education Institute is aligned with the student success goal of Achieve 2015 and VCCS redesign efforts in developmental mathematics and English.
The Institute is both a professional development opportunity and an opportunity to create and foster a faculty network, focused on the success of developmental education students leading to graduation, transfer, and entry into workforce The Institute will be held at the Berry Hill Resort and Conference Center, 3105 River Road, South Boston, Virginia 24592. The dates for the 2013 Chancellor’s Developmental Education Institute are June 2 – 7, 2013. All faculty and student services leaders accepted to the Chancellor’s Institute must commit to stay at the location for the full week.
All of the lodging and meals at the Institute will be funded by the VCCS for those faculty accepted to attend. All hotel reservations will be made through the VCCS System Office.
Eligibility
The Institute is designed for 25 VCCS developmental education faculty members and 25 VCCS student services leaders. Both full-time faculty and adjunct faculty are eligible to attend. Each college is allotted a space for one developmental education faculty member (developmental mathematics or developmental English faculty member) and one student services leader. The remaining four slots are designated for adjunct faculty or student services leaders from any of the 23 colleges who are teaching developmental mathematics or English. Adjunct faculty applicants will also be considered for the designated college slots.
In order to extend this exciting professional developmental opportunity deeper in the colleges, the participants who participate in the Institute will be required to develop and deliver professional development activities on their campuses, based on the information that they learned during the time at the Institute. The Institute will lay the foundation for a train-the-trainer type model whereby the participants at the Institute will share research and best practices broadly at their colleges during the academic year following the summer Institute.
Requirements for Participating Individuals
Application Process
The goal of the Institute is to develop a cadre of master developmental education faculty across the VCCS. The application process asks developmental education faculty to reflect on existing developmental education programs at their college and to envision how the program could change to increase student success. Each Institute participant will be required to complete a project during the course of the week, a blueprint for institutional change that can be facilitated through professional development and faculty commitment to change. This is a requirement for faculty members who attend. The competitive application process sets the foundation for the faculty member; each applicant is required to complete the following as part of the application process:
Essay Submission Criteria:
The selection process for the Institute is competitive. A review panel of VCCS leaders will select the participants based on the application criteria. Decisions of the review committee are final.
The application can be found by clicking here.
