Mission Statement of the Office of the Chancellor

Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia

The mission of the Chancellor's Office is to serve the University System of Georgia, its Board of Regents and thirty-five institutions, the State of Georgia, and other constituencies by providing leadership in higher education and stewardship of state and University System resources.

  • The Chancellor's Office will promote a statewide perspective on higher education that attends to the current and developing needs of the State, its citizens and students, and relates them effectively to the University System and its institutions.
  • The Chancellor's Office will support the Board of Regents in furthering and achieving its vision for the University System by providing leadership in analyzing, monitoring, and anticipating higher education trends and developments, and by planning strategically for the future of the University System.
  • The Chancellor's Office will guide the institutions in implementing Board of Regents policies and procedures; will foster strong relationships, open communications, and collaboration among University System institutions; and will coordinate services, proactively solve problems, and advance efficiency and effectiveness.
  • The Chancellor's Office will act as a steward of the state's higher education resources by managing fiscal resources through appropriate policies and audit procedures, overseeing facilities maintenance, renewal and renovation activities, approving and reviewing programs, coordinating faculty and staff development, using technology appropriately to advance the University System's mission, and evaluating information on the performance of the University System and its institutions.
  • The Chancellor's Office will promote collaboration with other entities and agencies in the public and private sectors, especially with K-12 and the Technical College System of Georgia, will interpret the University System's vision, goals and achievements, and will advocate for public higher education to external constituencies.
  • The Chancellor's Office will link the University System with business, government, and communities to encourage quality economic development across Georgia by developing the State's intellectual capital and leveraging the assets of the System through public-private partnerships, research, public service and continuing education for life-long learning.
  • The Chancellor's Office will develop, propose, and promote the University System budget request to the General Assembly.

The Chancellor's Office will set the highest standards for educational practice and policy in the state and will itself be characterized by:

  • a supportive climate, necessary staff and services, and leadership and development opportunities, all designed creatively to meet the needs of the University System according to the best national principles of higher education administration;
  • open communication structures to facilitate the growth and development of the best ideas across offices, levels, and among institutions; and a commitment to share information with constituents;
  • cultural, ethnic, racial, and gender diversity in the staff, to support policies and practices throughout the System that embody the ideals of an open, democratic, and global society;
  • broad-based decision-making, based on data and information; a continuous focus on quality and improvement; and an environment where human capital is nourished.
