INTRODUCTION

THESE REGULATIONS WILL BE ENFORCED IN THEIR ENTIRETY. PLEASE ACQUAINT YOURSELF WITH THEIR CONTENTS, AS IGNORANCE OF THE REGULATIONS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED IN APPEALS.

The following rules are enforced to promote safe bicycling on the University campus. The University of Montana reserves the right to amend these regulations at any time to promote and ensure fair and safe usage of the property under the jurisdiction of the University. All changes become effective immediately.

I. BASIC BICYCLE-OPERATION RULES

A. Bicycles are subject to both moving and parking fines and must conform to the University regulations, state laws and city ordinances, including purchase of City bicycle licenses. Licenses may be purchased on campus at the Office of Public Safety in the Physical Plant or at the University Center Information Desk.

B. Cyclists must obey all traffic control devices, and bikes may go no faster than two times pedestrian traffic while operated on campus grounds.

C. Cyclist shall yield the right-of-way to all pedestrians and persons with disabilities upon the campus grounds and shall give audible signal when passing a bicycle rider or pedestrian proceeding in the same direction.

D. Cyclists must observe all State laws while on campus grounds:
Stop for stop signs and red lights.
Ride with the flow of traffic.
Use lights when riding after dark.
Yield right of way when entering the roadway.
Cyclists must use hand signals to indicate changes in direction of travel.

E. BICYCLES MAY ONLY PARK IN BIKE RACKS and may not be secured to any other objects, natural or manmade, nor shall bikes obstruct sidewalks or building entrances. Bicycles may not be parked or stored within any campus building without specific authorization of the Office of Public Safety. Upon written request and justification for parking a bicycle in the requestor's office, permission may be granted by the Director of Public Safety to do so at anytime on weekends or holidays and between the hours of 5 p.m. and 8 a.m. on weekdays.

Bicycles may be stored within a Residence Life student room or approved storage area. Common access and stairways must be kept clear at all times.

The Office of Public Safety maintains the right to cut locks, chains, or cables for the purpose of impounding any bike in violation of these or other regulations.

U-shaped Kryptonite locks have proven the most effective against bike theft. Lock up your bike if you want to keep your property.

Individuals who habitually operate or park their bicycle improperly may be required to make an appearance before the Student Conduct Board for Non-Academic Misconduct. (An Habitual Offender is defined as being any person who has received three or more moving violation or parking violation citations within any 90 day period).
