How to Apply to The University of Montana as an Exchange Student

Students who wish to attend The University of Montana for a semester or year may apply as exchange (non-degree seeking) students. All exchange students must first be nominated to The University of Montana International Programs by their home institution in order to be considered for admission as an exchange student. If their home institution is one of The University of Montana's Exchange Partner universities, students first apply directly to their home institution; if their home institution is a member of the ISEP consortium, students apply first to their ISEP Coordinator at their home institution. Students cannot apply directly to The University of Montana to be an exchange student.

Foreign Student and Scholar Services (FSSS)

The office of Foreign Student and Scholar Services (FSSS) assumes responsibility for the general welfare of foreign students at The University of Montana from admission to graduation and practical training. It provides direct support services, consultation and liaison. The office assists in the reception and orientation of foreign students and helps with housing, integration into the university and community; interprets immigration regulations and laws; and assists with other concerns that may arise.

International Student Association (ISA)

The International Student Association (ISA) is the umbrella organization of all international students attending, or affiliated with, The University of Montana. The association promotes ethnic and cultural diversity to enhance interactions with the multiple facets of the international community at The University of Montana. Through organizing activities and social gatherings for students from foreign countries as well as the United States, ISA is a vibrant and refreshingly diverse group that brings together unique people and traditions from many countries and cultural regions, facilitating fascinating experiences to the campus community and Missoula.

Work Opportunities at The University of Montana

Exchange students attending The University of Montana usually have a J-1 visa, which entitles them to work on-campus up to 20 hours per week. (ISEP students must first obtain permission from the ISEP Central Office. Please contact The University of Montana's ISEP Coordinator for an application and instructions.) Under special circumstances or during vacation periods, students may work more than 20 hours per week.
