What’s New: Scholarship Luncheons

UIS 2008 Scholarship Luncheon

Bridges to Excellence

2008 Scholarship Luncheon slide show
On Thursday, November 6, 2008, over 200 people gathered in the Sangamon Auditorium Lobby for the annual Scholarship Luncheon. This year’s theme, created by Gwenda Sutton, was Bridges to Excellence (follow link to read special poem).

Vicki Megginsion, Associate Chancellor for Development and Senior Vice-President for the University of Illinois Foundation, warmly welcomed everyone to the event, which is always one of the happiest of the year at UIS.

Then, following a homey turkey-and-dressing meal, the Chancellor gave his welcome and then introduced our two speakers:

  • David Parsons, scholarship donor and CEO of the Central Illinois Community Blood Center
  • Allison Schultz, BA, ’08 and former scholarship recipient
    2006 Global Studies Scholarship
    2005 Howard & Lynda Humphrey Scholarship

    2005 Joy Kimley Accountancy Scholarship
    2004 Walter & Polly Roesch Scholarship

Please enjoy the slide show of the event which we have prepared for you.

Bridges to Brilliance

Our very talented student worker, Gwenda Sutton (pictured at left) gave us our theme for the 2008 Scholarship Luncheon: Bridges.

Herself a recipient of the Rosie Richmond Scholarship, Gwenda designed the program, complete with a poem which she wrote:

“From Here to There”

The difference between Here and There?
a single letter T:
pillar with overpass;
you to me.

“There” impels “Here,”
always beckoning;
“There” spans life’s chasms
while challenging
“Here” to cross over,
and perpetually
transforms “Now”
into Opportunity.

“Here” makes it “There”
and T makes the difference;
the bridge that connects
potential to brilliance.
