Faculty and Staff
The common goal of UIS faculty, staff, and the Career Development Center is student success. As stated in the UIS mission statement, “UIS provides its students with the knowledge, skills, and experience that lead to productive careers in the private and public sectors.” Therefore, the Career Development Center would like to formally invite the UIS staff and faculty to partner with us in promoting career development to students to ensure a seamless transition from college to the work force.

Invite Us to Give a Presentation to Your Class
CDC staff is available to present to your class or student organization on many career and professional development topics. Not sure what topic you would like us to present on? Review the customized presentation menu below. To request a Classroom Presentation, complete the Career Presentation Request Form 3-4 weeks prior to the requested date and indicate the presentation of interest. The form will allow you to indicate the allotted amount of time you would like for the presentation. Contact the CDC directly to explore presentation options.

Consult With the CDC on Ways We Can Support Your Curriculum
Faculty and staff may want to consult with the CDC staff about integrating career-related topics and career resources into their curriculum and assignments. Using CDC online and library resources will increase your students’ career development. Find out more about available online resources.
Curriculum integration example: Use the GOALS Program as a resource for class activities– The GOALS program was developed as a user friendly tool to engage students, staff and faculty to assist students in becoming more proactive in career development. Since the program reflects a comprehensive approach to career planning, the information can be easily integrated into classroom and extra-curricular activities.

Bring Your Class To The CDC For A Career Fieldtrip.
Consider bringing your students to the Career Development Center for a hands-on career learning experience. Providing this opportunity will allow students to identify how the CDC can assist with their career journey. The CDC Staff will accommodate and tailor the visit to your class needs. Past Career Fieldtrips included actual resume building, transferable skills identification, 60 second elevator pitch, orientation and registration for online resources, and more. Contact the CDC directly to explore Career Fieldtrip options.

The Career Speakers Bureau will assist in locating employers, alumni, or professionals to speak with your class. Topics vary from labor market, industry and sector information, grad school experiences, and recent career endeavors, depending on your request. Contact the CDC directly to discuss your interests. To request a Career Speaker, complete the Career Speaker Request Form 3-4 weeks prior to the requested date.
Encourage Student Involvement in CDC Events and Workshops
Help your students enhance their professional and career development byencouraging students to take advantage of the many services and programming provided by the Career Development Center. Our annual Collegiate Career Fair provides an excellent opportunity for students to meet representatives within a variety of industries and establish a network of contacts. We are available to assist students with advance preparation so they may effectively engage recruiters. Consider offering extra credit or making it an assignment for event participation. We will keep you posted about upcoming special events and workshops by email. We welcome the opportunity to assist you in tracking student attendance at these events for purposes of providing extra credit.

Faculty and Staff are encouraged to refer students to the Career Development Center. We work with students at every academic level from the first year through graduate school level. Our services and resources cover a wide range of career development issues and professional preparation including:
Career Counseling is available in-person or on-line for one hour appointments, to discuss individual career needs in a private setting. Students may call, email or come to the office to schedule an appointment.
Career Advising is by appointment or during Walk-In Hours. These services provide an opportunity to help students get started in our office with resume and cover letter critiquing, personal statement reviewing, mock interviewing, and using career online resources.

Employer-Faculty Connection
An important goal of the CDC’s Employer Relations Department is to connect students to jobs, internships, job shadowing, and networking opportunities within their field. Employers are frequently invited to campus for recruiting events, and faculty will be notified of on-campus recruiting related to their department. Your support and encouragement of student attendance at these events is always appreciated.
At the Career Development Center, we work directly with employers in an effort to build effective recruiting partnerships. Our business and community contacts can assist you in facilitating classroom presentations on topics related to your coursework. Employers recognize the competitive academic edge of the UIS student, and are willing to share the time and talent of their most astute professionals. These presentations can provide an inside look at particular jobs or career paths, while offering the shared knowledge of an experienced professional and an unprecedented networking opportunity.
