Paraprofessional Leadership Program

Who and what are the Career Specialists?

Our present paraprofessional staff consists of 5 full-time undergraduate students employed part-time by the UIS Career Development Center. Paraprofessionals are trained to assist students, alumni, prospective students and community members with a variety of basic career-related activities. This assistance is provided in many different ways, such as interacting one-on-one, facilitating career workshops and utilizing career information resources such as the internet and other web-based career systems. Career Specialists are also involved in the marketing of Career Development Center services and other office related activities.

What part of the GOALS program can Career Specialists assist me with?

Career Specialists can work with and guide you on elements of each of the GOALS concepts. However, parts of the program are designed to be conducted just with you and other parts with you and a career counselor. The sections we are most qualified to assist you with are:

O- Options to Explore (Research majors, occupations, labor market,companies, etc…)
A- Active Decision Making (Job shadowing, internships, mentoring,networking, etc....)
L- Launch Your Career (Job search, interviewing, offer evaluations, affiliations, etc…)

Walk-In Hours:
View our current walk-in hours. During walk-in hours, we can coach you on a variety of career activities, including the following:

• Resume & Cover Letter Critiques
• Personal Statement Development
• Interview & Mock Interview Preparation
• Career Fair & Career Event Preparation
• General Career, Job Hunt, and Grad School Advice
• Career Library Assistance
• Online Career Resource Guidance

20 Minute “Quick Stop” Appointments:
Give us a call at 206-6508 for availability. These appointments are designed to allow a quick, but more focused and personalized session between students and the Career Specialists. In addition to the activities offered during walk-in hours, we can also pursue:

• Mock Interviews
• In-Depth Resume, Cover Letter, and Personal Statement Critiques
• Individualized Career Advising

By Phone:
Can’t make it in to our office for our services? No problem! Give us a call and we can work on virtually everything we can during walk-in hours and 20-minute appointments.

By E-Mail:
No time to stop by or pursue a phone session? No problem! Shoot us an e-mail with your resume, cover letter, or other questions! We will respond as quickly as we can to meet your deadlines and specific needs.

Workshops:
Register to attend our workshops either in-person or online to see us! Sometimes we may be the presenters of the workshops and other times we are just supporting the presenter(s). Ask us questions and talk to us! We are here to help YOU!.

Events:
See us at our Career Fair? Notice us at the Extreme Entrepreneurship Tour? TALK TO US! Ask us questions to get the “inside scoop” on the event or just to answer any questions you might have. We are here to help you!

Classes and Around Campus:
Notice us in one of your classes or in the cafeteria? Say hi! If you have quick career related questions, we will try to answer them the best we can...but remember, we can best serve you and your career in our office.

How can I become a Career Specialist?

Time Commitment: Selected students must commit to total of 3 semesters (fall and spring terms) which includes one semester of on the job training. Must be able to begin 2-3 weeks prior to Fall Semester. A commitment of 8 to 10 assigned hours per week.

Responsibilities:

• During walk-in hours greet, register and advise about CDC services and resources available
• Provide career advising
• Assist constituents in locating information in the career library and virtual career center
• Critique resumes, cover letters and personal statements
• Conduct mock interviews
• Provide instruction for Discover, CareerSearch, WinWay, UIS-Success and Elluminate
• Research career articles and resources to development handouts and information for CDC Virtual Career Center
• Develop and market workshops and presentations to classroom, club and residential housing
• Assist in coordination and marketing of career fair and special events
• Be familiar with and adhere to professional ethics and standards as noted by the National Association of Colleges and Employers

Minimum Qualifications:
Academic standing: minimum 2.5 GPA at time of application and throughout employment
Must be enrolled as a UIS student

Able to make a minimum commitment of a total of 3 semesters (fall and spring terms).
Meet the required commitment of 8 to 10 assigned hours per week.

Preferred experience in Microsoft Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Publisher, Web Design

Ability to demonstrate the following:

- Strong work ethic, reliable, flexible, enthusiastic

- Written and oral communication skills; student oriented, approachable

- Team player, leadership role, awareness and acceptance of diversity

- Consistent productivity, self-motivated

This position is open to all students seeking part-time and work-study employment.
