Scholarships that Benefit International Students
The Robert Crowley Scholarship Fund
In January 2016, UIS received a new scholarship for international students. The scholarship came from Wenguang Huang, the first international student to enroll at UIS (then Sangamon State University).
He is a writer, journalist and translator whose articles and translations have appeared in publications such as The Wall Street Journal Asia, Chicago Tribune and The Christian Science Monitor.
In 2012, Wenguang spoke at Commencement at UIS, and in 2015, hereceived the UIS Alumni Achievement Award. You can find a WUIS Education interview with Wenguang here: A Chat with UIS Alumni Achievement Award Winner.
Mr. Huang started his scholarship for the following reasons:
- So that international students will get the same opportunities he did while attending UIS;
- To help the University in its efforts to bring diversity to the campus and the city of Springfield;
- To help people learn about different cultures.
The scholarship honors Robert Crowley, professor emeritus of human development counseling, a founding faculty member of Sangamon State University. Wenguang and Dr. Crowley met when Dr. Crowley was an exchange professor to Shanghai Teachers University. He introduced Huang to the idea of coming to the States for further study.
