The University of Florida Libraries offers researchers many resources important for class use. Resources for teaching and learning are intended to help navigate the researcher through the variety of book and article resources available while enrolled in the School. This guide, to accompany the in-person library sessions, is for ProTeach students.

Finding Children's Literature for the Classes you Teach

As you ready yourself for classroom instruction, you may wonder where to locate children's books for use in your classes. The resources listed on the Children's Literature page provides links to information about award-winning books, fully available online digital libraries, and links to related associations. Among the most recommended sources on the page are:

• Library Catalog to find books held by the Education Library and other UF Libraries across campus. Several children's book collections exist, including ones located at the Education Library and Mead Library.


• Children's Literature Comprehensive Database(CLCD), to locate books by such criteria as specific language, grade, ages, lexile range, interest level and publication date. Book and author reviews as well as links to similar items and bookseller information.


• The Core Collections available through the EBSCOHost service allow you to identify grade appropriate books for inclusion in a school library. You can also find book reviews and limit your searchs by fiction or non-fiction books.

• International Children's Digital Library provides access to children's books from around the world, available to read fully online. This database allows searching by age groups, length of books, type of book (e.g. picture books, fairy tales), and language.


• Literature Resource Center enables searching for authors based on name, nationality, and ethnicity. It also provides critical reviews of literature available.

Finding Lesson Plans, Standards and Education Resources for the Classes you Teach

Many sources are available to locate lesson plans, standards and educational resources. The Education Librarians have provided a Curriculum Guides and Lesson Plans portal to lead to authoritative websites that provide easy access to credible sources for these tools. In addition, the UF Libraries offers access to representative K12 databases to UF students, faculty and staff. Once graduated from the University of Florida, these resources will not be available; however, if remaining in the state of Florida, if you have a public library card, you can use similar resources provided by the Florida Electronic Library.

Finding Books and Articles for Your Academic Papers

Searching the Library Catalog will lead to books, electronic books, multimedia, journals, reports and other materials held by the Education Library and other UF Libraries across campus. Remember that the Library Catalog can only tell you if we have a particular journal volume in our collection, not the specific article name within the journal.

The UF Libraries subscribes to over 400 databases that provide the table of contents and sometimes full content to various resource types, including journals, magazines, newspapers, conference proceedings, reviews, reports, reference materials, and book articles. Databases have either a multidisciplinary or subject specific focus. The librarians at the Education Library have identified key databases for use by researchers and students interested in topics in education. Databases

• have varying coverage of publication types and coverage dates
• can contain full text content which enables the researcher to view the full article online
• are subscription based so are restricted to UF affiliated researchers who login when using them off campus.

Highly recommended education-specific databases include:

• ERIC, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education, Institute of Education Sciences, provides access bibliographic information and some full text to journal articles, books, research syntheses, conference papers, technical reports, policy papers, and other education-related materials going back to 1966.
• Education Full Text (1983 to date) and Education Full-Text Retrospective (1929-1983)
• Professional Development Collection

Other article databases with citation or full text coverage include JSTOR (full text e-journal database, but with limited education-specific titles), Academic Search Premier (multidisciplinary database with full text), Web of Science (multidisciplinary citation database), and LexisNexis Academic (full text newspaper database with limited legal (court cases and legislative) and medical resources). Other databases listed on the key databases page offer specific subject emphasis for counseling and psychology topics ( PsycNET, PsycInfo, and Mental Measurements Yearbook (a comprehensive guide to over 2,000 contemporary testing instruments)). Though these are the recommended databases to use for topics in education, more education databases are available.

Please note that because some of these databases only provide the citation and abstract, you will need to click on the Find it @ UF button to discover if the article is available in full text from another subscription database or if the journal is held in the collection (search UF Library Catalog).

Finding Disserations

The Finding Disserations page provides links to search for both UF and non-UF dissertations. Note that many non-UF dissertations will need to be requested via the library's Interlibrary Loan system.

Citing your Resources

Once the academic paper is written, proper citation of the works is necessary. The Writing Resources page provides links to specific Manuals of Style and access to the library-provided RefWorks Bibliographic Management Tool.
