A Message from Enrique Hernandez, MD

Abraham Roth Professor and Chair, Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences

For over a century, the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at Temple University has conducted research and provided clinical care to women of all ages and in virtually all aspects of reproductive medicine. As a major provider of obstetrical service, Temple University Hospital delivers over 3,000 babies a year, providing routine as well as highly sophisticated obstetrical care. In addition to 12 labor/delivery/recovery rooms, the obstetrical floor includes three operating rooms, a 27-bed post-partum and 8-bed antepartum unit, 26-bassinet infant intensive care unit, and a 27-bassinet well-baby nursery. The babies can room in with their mother. There is easy access to sophisticated medical and surgical care for sick newborns, either at Temple University Hospital or at our affiliate site, St. Christopher Hospital for Children.

Over 2,000 gynecologic surgical procedures are performed at Temple University Hospital every year. These include general gynecologic procedures, minimally invasive surgery (laparoscopic and robotic-assisted) hysteroscopy, radical abdominal/pelvic procedures for malignancy and pelvic reconstructive surgery. The fact that Temple University School of Medicine and its hospitals are components of an academic research university and a large health system makes Temple University Hospital very uniquely positioned to provide intensive, complex, high technology care to complicated obstetrical and gynecological patients. Indeed, this is precisely the dominant patient population served by the Temple Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences.

In addition to the inpatient units (OB-3rd hospital floor, Gyn 5-East) outpatients are seen at Temple's outpatient building in the Faculty Practice suite (7th floor) and the Gyn/Family Planning Clinic (8th floor). The Obstetric Clinic, Maternal Fetal Medicine Clinic, the Diabetes in Pregnancy Clinic, and our Colposcopy Clinic are held on the 5th floor of the Outpatient Building. Patients with gynecologic cancers are seen at the Temple Cancer Center. Gynecologic Oncology patients are also seen at Chestnut Hill Hospital on Germantown Avenue and at Holy Redeemer Hospital in Meadowbrook.  Women with pelvic floor dysfunction are seen at Temple's outpatient building and at Temple's Women's Center on Old York Road, Elkins Park.

A perinatal center with state-of-the-art equipment for fetal assessment, treatment and monitoring is housed in our Outpatient Practice (8th floor Outpatient Building) with satellites in the maternal-infant inpatient unit and in the nearby Temple’s Northeastern Ambulatory Care Center.  The reproductive endocrinologists have offices in Willow Grove and Lansdowne and see patients in consultation on Friday afternoons in our Faculty Practice suite on the 7th floor of the Outpatient Building.

The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Temple University School of Medicine provides not only comprehensive women’s health services, but also excellent education and training to our students and residents.

Sincerely,

Enrique Hernandez, MD
