The Alliance for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) — Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBES) program is an initiative of the National Science Foundation. The program is designed to significantly increase the number of students receiving doctoral degrees in the social sciences, behavioral sciences, and economics, with special emphasis on the population groups underrepresented in those fields. Target populations include African Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, Alaskan Natives, Native Hawaiians, and other Pacific Islanders.
The AGEP–SBES program at Temple University is part of a seven-member consortium known as the Great Lakes Alliances for SbeS (GLASS), which is spearheaded by Northwestern University. Funding was initiated in Fall 2005. The program at Temple University is under the purview of the Graduate School. Six departments in the College of Liberal Arts are the focus of the AGEP–SBES efforts at Temple.
To reduce the sizable gap between the number of underrepresented minority (URM) students who earn an undergraduate degree and the number of URMs who continue their education at the graduate level, Temple has pledged to:
