Interior Design

Tidewater Community College’s Interior Design program has earned some notable recognition in recent months.

This September, TCC alumna Carole Harrell, an interior design student at Virginia Commonwealth University, earned first place out of 41 entries from TCC and four-year institutions, including Virginia Tech and Radford, in the Virginia IDEAs competition, sponsored by the American Society of Interior Designers, Virginia chapter and the International Interior Design Association, Virginia/West Virginia chapter. The annual competition gives students the opportunity to compete at the state level by creating interior design entries that use scale and proportion, color, lighting and a positive relationship of materials, texture and patterns.

This fall, interior design students honed professional skills by competing in a design contest for the Homearama charity house, with two teams advancing to the final round of the competition. “Our students did a spectacular job showcasing what they are learning in the program,” says Robert Pappas, instructor of interior design. “Our program teaches students to utilize the principles and elements of design to create elegant, functional spaces that meet client needs.”

Students also helped transform the newly constructed Cameron Lea, a Homearama home, into a livable dwelling in May 2011. Realizing an opportunity for hands-on experience, students worked with professional designers to stage furniture, hang art work, place decorative objects and ready the home for public viewing.

Students gained additional experience by developing an interior design for the welcome center for Equikids, a nonprofit group that provides equine-assisted activities for people with mental, physical, emotional, social or learning-disabling conditions. “Giving back to the community is important, and we were proud to utilize this opportunity to grow and learn,” says Alex Reichardt, interior design instructor.
