About the Commission

The New Jersey Pinelands Commission is an independent state agency whose mission is to "preserve, protect, and enhance the natural and cultural resources of the Pinelands National Reserve, and to encourage compatible economic and other human activities consistent with that purpose."

To accomplish its mission, the Commission implements a comprehensive plan that guides land use, development and natural resource protection programs in the 938,000-acre Pinelands Area of southern New Jersey. Additional information about the plan can be found on the Comprehensive Management Plan page.

The Commission's 15-member board consists of state, county and federal appointees who volunteer their time and expertise. The panel meets monthly and receives guidance from an Executive Director and Commission staff. The Commission Members page includes additional information about the board, including biographical sketches of each member.

The Commission's Executive Director heads a staff of 44 environmental reviewers, planners, scientists, analysts and others. The Staff Directory page includes an updated list of departments and employees.

The Commission's staff members work in several buildings located on the grounds of the historic Fenwick Manor farmstead at 15 Springfield Road in Pemberton Township, NJ. These buildings include the Richard J. Sullivan Center for Environmental Policy and Education, as well as a 3-1/2 story farmhouse, a carriage house and a barn. The Commission typically holds it monthly meetings in the conference room in the Sullivan Center. The Directions page includes a map and directions from various locations to the Commission's offices.

The Commission's By-Laws include detailed information about the agency's purpose, functions, structure and powers.
