WELCOME TO THE FRESHMAN ACADEMIES!
All incoming, first-time freshmen are assigned to one of the College’s six Freshmen Academies, based on their chosen field of study. The Academies have been designed to strengthen your academic and extra-curricular experience, and to give you personalized guidance through your first two semesters.
As part of a FRESHMAN ACADEMY, you will gain an edge to future success, whether you plan to transfer to another college or university for a bachelor’s degree, enter the workplace or do both.
How do we create this success?
PERSONALIZED GUIDANCE:
Every new freshman is assigned a FRESHMAN ADVISOR who is affiliated with your Freshman Academy. Your advisor is an expert on your area of study and meets with you to help you plan your program for your first two semesters at Queensborough. Your advisor is also your “go-to” person for any questions, concerns or issues you might have as a new freshman. The advisors are located in specific academy offices throughout the campus.
HIGH IMPACT LEARNING EXPERIENCES:
e-Portfolio – a personalized, electronic archiving system which allows students to express their educational goals and see their own progress as a student as they move through college. It can also incorporate social networking.
Learning Communities – two courses taught by two different professors which are linked by a theme. The same students are in each of the classes. These classes assist students in seeing connections between disciplines, and help them get to know their fellow students and professors.
Service Learning – class assignments that take students’ work out into the community. Students learn more about the subject they are studying while making an impact outside the classroom, encouraging civic engagement.
Writing Intensive Courses – courses specifically designed to improve students’ writing ability through all the academic disciplines. Two writing intensive courses are required to graduate.

EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITES:
Working with faculty, your Freshman Advisor plans workshops and activities that help you sharpen your career and educational focus, better prepare you for later transfer and work, and introduce you to a variety of topics related to the programs of study within your academy. Special events and field trips are also included, such as trips to museums, places of employment, laboratories, performances, and more.
What if you change your focus within your first year of study?
Students can move easily from one academy to another. Working with your freshman academy, this is an easy transition. Most programs require a foundation of “general education” courses, required for completion of your degree and for transfer to another college. These core courses are usually required for most programs..
Our goal is your success – and that means we want you to be in the program and the Freshman Academy that is right for you.
