Queensborough Community College, a college of The City University of New York, is located on a lush 37-acre campus in Bayside, Queens, New York. The College was established in 1959 on the former site of the historic Oakland Golf Club and offers a rich liberal arts and science curriculum as well as career and pre-professional courses. The College’s transfer programs are designed for students who plan to continue their studies at a four-year institution. Career programs provide the academic foundation and training for students who plan to begin or advance in a great career. Queensborough offers the Associate in Arts (A.A.), the Associate in Science (A.S.) and the Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S.) degrees, as well as non-credit Continuing Education programs. More than 16,000 credit and another 10,000 Continuing Education students are enrolled at Queensborough. More than 70 percent transfer to senior colleges or universities, and others obtain the necessary skills for career advancement.
The College’s student body reflects the diversity of Queens, the most diverse borough in New York City. Students originate from approximately 140 countries and more than a third speak a language other than English at home. The ethnicity of the student body is almost evenly split among minorities.
The Association of American Colleges and Universities has recognized Queensborough Community College as a national leader in establishing an institution-wide, student-centered learning environment through its Freshman Academies. The Freshman Academies were launched in fall 2009 to improve graduation and retention rates and have earned national accolades. All first-time, full-time students enroll in one of the five Freshman Academies: Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM); Liberal Arts; Visual and Performing Arts; Health Related Sciences; and Business. Each Academy includes high impact learning strategies that have been identified through research studies, such as learning communities; writing intensive instruction; collaborative projects and assignments; academic service learning; undergraduate research; common intellectual experiences; and diversity/global learning. Queensborough students quickly discover that they are part of a community of professors and peers who believe in fostering a culture of academic excellence while being nurtured as an individual in a supportive atmosphere.
Queensborough has approximately 400 full-time faculty. Nearly 60 percent hold their doctoral degrees and are encouraged to undertake research in community college pedagogy, as well as the traditional discipline-based research, to build a “learning culture” for themselves and their students. Faculty are encouraged to use their classrooms to experiment with new approaches to improving learning within their academic disciplines, and are assisted by an in-house resource for faculty called the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning that focuses on research and publications on effective community college pedagogy.
The College is also dedicated to providing cultural and artistic opportunities to students and the community through the Queensborough Performing Arts Center (QPAC), QCC Art Gallery and the Harriet and Kenneth Kupferberg Holocaust Resource Center and Archives. All are integrated into the curriculum and are used as learning laboratories for Queensborough students.
Queensborough Community College is accredited by the Commission of Higher Education of the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools. The Business programs are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs. The Nursing program is registered by the New York State Education Department and is accredited by the National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission. The Computer Engineering Technology programs are accredited by Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET.
