How do humans easily perceive objects in 3-D when our vision is two-dimensional? What role does the prefrontal cortex play in children who have ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder)? What can we learn about the complex interaction of protein factors and various cells to further our understanding of epilepsy, dementia, and other diseases? To explore such questions, faculty at the Neuroscience Research Center apply perspectives from a variety of disciplines and synthesize molecular, cellular, systems, computational, and behavioral techniques.

Founded as a CUNY institute in 2004, our center greatly benefits from the collaboration of psychologists, biologists, physiologists, behaviorists, biochemists, chemists, and computational neuroscientists, as well as anthropologists, philosophers, physicists, mathematicians, and computer scientists. Our faculty have published nearly 900 peer-reviewed publications, one-third of them in the past five years. Since 1990 they have received more than 60 external grants.

QC offers a major in neuroscience and, with CUNY’s Graduate Center, supports the PhD-level Neuropsychology Subprogram. More than half of the 40 neuroscience mentors are affiliated with the center. Faculty were instrumental in obtaining funding for the Howard Hughes Undergraduate Science Education Program and the NIH-supported MARC U-STAR program, which allows students from underrepresented groups to get extensive experience in biomedical research. An annual symposium showcases a high-impact speaker in neuroscience, and a neuropsychology research day features faculty/student projects.
