Visit Turkey with Queens College May 25- June 2, 2012

Join us for an exciting tour of  Turkey, one of the world’s oldest and most fascinating countries.

Highlights of our trip will include:

Istanbul: We will visit Hagia Sophia, one of the greatest surviving examples of Byzantine architecture; the Hippodrome, the colossal stadium that once hosted gladiator fights and triumphal parades; the Sultan Ahmet Mosque (also known as the Blue Mosque), a superb creation in the classical Ottoman style; the Topkapi Palace, home to some of Turkey’s greatest rulers and now a splendid museum. We will also be among the first to visit Nobel Prize-winner Orhan Pamuk’s new museum and be treated to a special talk by a member of the staff.

Cappadocia: We will walk through the lunar landscape of Cappadocia and see astonishing rock formations in Devrent Valley; visit the “fairy chimneys,” where the voice of the wind mixes with the “songs of fairies”; see great examples of Byzantine art in the Goreme Open Air Museum; explore the astonishing underground city of Kaymakli.

We will also see the great Ionian city of Ephesus, the best-preserved classical city in the Eastern Mediterranean; visit a traditional pottery workshop; see a demonstration of how beautiful Turkish rugs are made; explore a Silk Road caravansary; enjoy lectures by faculty from Queens College and several Turkish universities; and much more.

Cost per person for 9 days and 8 nights will begin at $2000 plus airfare. This includes double-room occupancy at a boutique hotel (single room rates available); all transportation within Turkey; English-speaking guide; welcome and farewell dinners at an Istanbul restaurant; and entrance fees to all sites. A list of suggested fiction and nonfiction readings will be supplied.
