"Whatever sociology may be, it is the result of constantly asking the question, what is the meaning of this?"
- - C. Wright Mills

"Anthropology is the science which tells us that people are the same the whole world over - except when they are different."
--Nancy Banks-Smith

Welcome to the Department of Sociology & Anthropology!

We offer B.A. and M.A. degree programs in both Sociology and Anthropology.
If you are interested in studying how human beings create and negotiate their social worlds, then we would invite you to consider our programs which provide students the opportunity to study with nationally and internationally-known faculty who are outstanding scholars in their field:

SOCIOLOGY PROGRAM

Are you fascinated by the dynamics of human social interaction?  Would you like to investigate the root causes of social problems?  Are you interested in social change?  Then you may wish to consider majoring in sociology.  Sociology is the systematic study of human social life.  The undergraduate program in sociology provides students with the basic tools of sociological analysis including social research methods (both quantitative and qualitative) and theory.  Furthermore, our curriculum equips students to more effectively negotiate the diverse society in which we live by addressing social inequalities such as race/ethnicity, gender and social class.  Above all, our program--which emphasizes writing, critical thinking, group dialogue, and one-on-one faculty mentorship-- gives our graduates the strong writing, research, and analytic skills that are increasingly attractive to employers in the information age.  Our majors go on to work in federal, state, local, and international agencies, in private businesses, and in nonprofit organizations.  In addition, many go on to pursue graduate studies in law, medicine, journalism, and the social sciences.

I
f you are interested in conducting original research in the social sciences or would like to become a professional sociologist, we encourage you to consider our M.A. program in sociology.   We offer a quality program that includes seminars and training in research and professional development and prepares students for future careers as professionals in the social sciences.  Graduates of our program have gone on to enter Ph.D. programs in sociology, to teach in community colleges and universities, and to work as researchers in both the private and public sector.

ANTHROPOLOGY PROGRAM

A
nthropologists have traditionally dealt with other cultures, either in the past or in other countries.  Our undergraduate program offers a full range of courses aimed at understanding how other people organize their lives, providing critical insight into a modern world in which the relationships between peoples of different cultures have become increasingly critical.  Of course, the study of other cultures leads to a clearer perspective on how our own culture works.  One of the keys to interpreting the present is a thorough understanding of the past.  Courses that deal with prehistory and human origins are also well represented in our undergraduate curriculum.  And, since our faculty members have active research programs in all of these areas, they bring these topics alive in the classroom.  An undergraduate anthropology degree is particularly suited to preparing for a career in law, medicine, international relations, or any job that involves dealing with people effectively.

Although some of our undergraduates are working at entry level jobs in archaeology, most careers in anthropology require an advanced degree.  We offer a two-year course of study leading to a Masters degree in anthropology.  During the first year of the program students participate in seminars which review the entire field of anthropology and prepare them for a two-day comprehensive examination.  After passing this exam, Masters candidates select a thesis director and committee to work with them on designing a thesis project.  All of our graduates must demonstrate the ability to do original anthropological research, preparing them for Ph.D programs or research positions in anthropology.
