Are you looking for a Sociology M.A. program where you won’t get lost in the crowd?
We’re it! Our department offers the opportunity to work with nine dedicated and enthusiastic full-time sociology faculty who have a broad range of exciting teaching and research interests. If you walk down the halls of the department you might hear people talking about gender at work in the catfish industry, the inside workings of an alternative hard core punk subculture, the existence of “global government,” social networks and Katrina, demographic analysis and the Census Bureau, food and identity across cultures, the sociology of literature, race and the media, the environment and the media and more.
Our recent M.A. graduate students have completed theses on gender and rugby, the experiences of volunteers in English as Second Language programs, community organizing, and Mississippi blues music. They’ve gone on to pursue careers at the Census Bureau and other government agencies, Community Colleges, and Ph.D. programs.
Our M.A. Program
The graduate program in Sociology offers a two-year program with both a thesis and a non-thesis option. The coursework requirements will equip students with a solid background in methods, theory, and a variety of core substantive fields including gender, race and ethnicity, deviance, and culture. A new course on teaching sociology prepares students for their work as teaching assistants and for possible future careers in the classroom. A new professional development seminar during the first year allows students to get to know the faculty and their graduate cohort while addressing practical issues of concern to sociologists including research and teaching skills and ethics, presenting at conferences, publishing, finding grants, applying for PhD programs, and more.
Financial Assistance
The Department strives to fund as many qualified students as possible. Most students accepted into the program receive funding in the form of teaching and research assistantships. These assistantships provide partial tuition waivers and annual stipends of approximately $5,000 . Opportunities for summer research assistantships are sometimes available. In addition to departmental assistantships, there are non-service University honors fellowships and minority fellowships available for qualifying students.
