PROSPECTIVE GRADUATE STUDENTS in ANTHROPOLOGY
Course Schedule | M.A. Requirements

Are you looking for a hands-on graduate program in anthropology?

C
ome to Ole Miss!  Our graduate faculty is doing field work in Central America, Europe, and, of course, Mississippi.  We excavate prehistoric temple mounds, Bronze Age hamlets, and ancient Maya  burial caves.  We study the early colonial Southeast using documents,  shovels, and space age remote sensing techniques.  We interview religious leaders and their congregations in order to understand the place of Islam in contemporary Europe.  And we take our students along.  Whether you are working in archaeology and interested in the advancement made possible with a graduate degree  or are interested in preparation for a Ph.D. program and, ultimately, an academic career, the mix of  the classroom, lab work, and field work that we offer will serve you well.

Our M.A. Program
Not only do we provide you the opportunity to do research, we demand it.  All graduates will have done their own research and reported it in a monograph-length thesis.  But first they must demonstrate a mastery of the field of anthropology by passing a set of comprehensive examinations given at the end of their first year.  The second year is spent in gathering data for the thesis, analyzing those data, and writing them up.  Ours is a two-year program and the majority of our successful students are able to finish within the time.

Financial Assistance
The Department strives to fund as many qualified students as possible. Most students accepted into the program receive funding in the form of teaching and research assistantships. We guarantee funding for two full years of study. These  assistantships provide a waiver of out-of-state tuition, a 75% reduction in in-state tuition and annual stipends of approximately $3,600 . Opportunities for paid research with the Center for Archaeological Research are regularly available. In addition to departmental assistantships, there are non-service University honors fellowships and minority fellowships available for qualifying students.
