Assistant Professor of Nursing
Vickie Southall is an Assistant Professor at the University of Virginia where she teaches pediatric and community health nursing. She received her BSN from the Medical College of Virginia School of Nursing at Virginia Commonwealth University and her MSN from the University of Virginia. She has worked on pediatric units in Richmond, Petersburg, and Charlottesville, for the Instructive Visiting Nurse Association in Richmond, and at several schools. She also does the payroll, taxes, and monthly accounting for a rural family practice.
Having had her first experience at UVA as a patient on the pediatric unit, she has taught pediatric nursing at UVA since 1985 and serves as UVA's representative to the state School Nurse Institute Partnership (SNIP).In 1997, she was offered the opportunity to combine her community service with her teaching and began also teaching community health in her hometown of nearby rural Louisa County. She has won four Innovative Teaching Awards and numerous community service awards. Her book, Guidelines for Specialized Health Care Procedures, was distributed to every public school in Virginia. She serves on the Boards of Directors of Jefferson Area CHIP (Child Health Improvement Program), Volunteers of Louisa, and the Louisa County Santa Council (which assists 500+ families each year).Her community service activities include mentoring an elementary student each week, Family Assessment Planning Team, Community Emergency Response Team, Virginia School Health Advisory Board, Virginia Cooperative Extension Leadership Council, school volunteer, and founding member of the local Habitat for Humanity.
