Visiting Scholars

Since 2004, we have been pleased to host 37 Visiting Scholars from China, Japan, Korea, Singapore Taiwan and Thailand. They have included government health care policy makers as well as nursing clinicians and faculty who have come to UVA for short, concentrated courses and for year-long studies.

Guomei Xu – Fall 2009

VS - 2009 - Guomei 1 Guomei Xu was our Visiting Scholar in Nursing during the Fall Semester in 2009. She is a nurse at the Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital in Nanjing, China. She began her work at the School of Nursing and the Health System after completing a month-long course in the Center for the Study of English Language and Culture. She worked closely with two mentors within the school of nursing, Marianne Baernholdt and Holly Hintz and her sponsor was Dr. John Peale.

During her semester with us, Guomei attended three graduate courses in the School of Nursing. Her coursework included GCNL 5210: Introduction to Nursing Leadership and the Health Care System, GNUR 8005: Introduction to both classroom and clinical teaching in nursing and GNUR 6058: Ethics, Nursing and the Larger Health Care Arena.

Guomei had the opportunity to observe multiple areas of The University of Virginia Health System including: The Operating Room, Central Sterile Supply, Pre-anesthesia, Evaluation and Testing Center, Surgical Admission Suite, Post Anesthesia Care Unit, Outpatient Surgery Center, Thoracic Cardiovascular Intensive Care, Intermediate Care, and Acute Care Units, General Medicine Inpatient Unit, General Surgery/Transplant Unit, Thoracic Cardiovascular Outpatient Clinic, and Continuum Home Health Agency. Guomei also participated in:

• A clinical course for undergraduate students in medical-surgical nursing
• A week-long healthcare worker safety training with a Chinese delegation in the International Healthcare Worker Safety Center, which does research and aides countries around the world to make health care safer for the health care workers. The course trained the participants in the use of EPINet to improve and monitor health care worker safety.
• Nursing forums each week in the School of Nursing, where nursing faculty and others presented their work in education, teaching, and service.
• • The Center for Global Health’s annual research meeting
• Professional Nursing Staff Organization annual Nursing Congress Day in November, to observe our shared governance model at work
• Observing nursing practice at Martha Jefferson Hospital, a community hospital in Charlottesville

We thoroughly enjoyed having Guomei here and we are grateful to the Center for Global Health and the Peale Fellowship for their support of Guomei’s work. We are also grateful to our friends at Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital in Nanjing, China for making it possible for Guomei to come to us.
