The National Institutes of Health Extramural Associates Research Development Award (EARDA) allowed us to establish the Health Science Research Assistance Center (HSRAC) in the School of Science, Health and Technology (SHT) under the leadership of the Dean of the School, Dr. Hiroko I. Karan at Medgar Evers College during the Fall 1997 semester.

HSRAC is designed to assist faculty, students and administrators in identifying grant opportunities through timely dissemination of grant and contract availability and to assist in applying for grants. Medgar Evers College Office of Sponsored Research (OSR) is operates and supervised by Mr. George Morales, the Executive Director. OSR has both pre- and post award services. HSRAC collaborates with OSR to increase the number and improve the quality of grant proposals submitted by faculty, administrators and students.

HSRAC ACTIVITIES UPDATE

HSRAC had a very active 1998-1999 academic year sponsoring many grant related workshops to assist faculty, write grant proposals and develop research collaborations with researchers at outside institutions. Due to HSRAC's direct and indirect assistance, more faculty members in the School of SHT obtained research related funds from local and Federal sources. Two pilot projects in Biology and one in Health Science have been selected and grant seed money from EARDA to enhance research activities to enable faculty members to write more competitive grant applications. Workshops about obtaining grant information from the Internet were also provided in the Fall of 1998 and Spring of 1999 semesters. HSRAC continues these activities during the 1999-2000 academic year. We look forward to your participation and hope to increase and update your knowledge about grant writing. The College community is invited to participate.

HSRAC ADVISORY COMMITTEE

HSRAC Advisory Committee members represents a cross section of college administrators, faculty, departmental chairs and students in various disciplines. They bring broad based expertise to advise and monitor the activities of HSRAC. Committee input and evaluation enhances the operation of HSRAC.

WHERE IS THE HSRAC OFFICE?

The HSRAC office is located at 1150 Carroll Street, in Room 315, adjacent to the Office of the Dean of School of Science, Health and Technology, and it is linked to the College's Office of Sponsored Research and the Department of Social and Behavioral Sciences in the School of Liberal Arts and Education.

WHAT is FRAC?

FRAC is the acronym for the Faculty Research Advisory Committee at Medgar Evers College, established to assist and advise Dr. Karan, Committee Chairperson. Committee members serve as liaisons with faculty to facilitate research related activities. The Chair works closely with the committee members to disseminate grant and contract information in Natural, Biomedical, Environmental and Behavioral Sciences and to collect information about faculty research interests and encourage colleagues to attend HSRAC related activities.

The Committee also collaborates with Mr. George Morales, Executive Director and Mr. Chi Koon, Deputy Director of the Office of Sponsored Research that provide pre/post award services to the College community.
