Please understand the sequential nature of the mathematics courses. Make sure your students meet the prerequisites for their math courses and that they do need the courses for their degrees.
- Any student who does not have credit for one of the introductory mathematics courses or any higher level UA math course from here or from another institution must take the placement test.
- Placement scores give a student the permission to enter a course, but the student may not need that course. He/she may want to take a lower level course to fulfill a degree requirement.
- The ranges of placement scores are set to reflect the success rates for corresponding courses. Do not push students to cross these ranges.
- Math 112 and 113, or Math 115, or placement (score 44 or higher) are prerequisites for Math 125 (the first course in Calculus sequence). Normally students need not take Math 112 and 113, or Math 115 if they do not intend to take Calculus.
- Students who only need math to satisfy the core requirement should normally take Math 110.
- For C&BA advisors: For students in Finance or Economics who are interested in graduate school, do not put them in Math 121 (a dead-end course). Put them in Math 125.
- For CE advisors: Please do not put your students in a course above their current mathematical level.
- Do check prerequisites and corequisites, if any, when you advise your students.
- For special cases, please contact the math department.
MATH 005 Remedial Mathematics. No credit awarded. With a slower pace, this course helps students to master the concepts of elementary algebra.
MATH 100 Intermediate Algebra. Building on the topics presented in Math 005, this course quickly leads students to more algebra and applications. The material is presented at a faster pace.
MATH 110 Finite Mathematics. To satisfy the UA core requirement, this course is designed for students who do not need calculus for their specific program. This course places an emphasis on problem solving and is beneficial for later statistics courses. Students who only need math to satisfy the core requirement should normally take Math 110.
MATH 112 Precalculus Algebra. This course requires a solid background in algebra and is the first step toward calculus. It incorporates topics from Math 100 into its curriculum and provides future calculus students with a good foundation in functions and their graphs. Normally students need not take Math 112 and 113, or Math 115 if they do not intend to take Calculus.
MATH 113 Precalculus Trigonometry. With a passing grade in Math 112, students in this course should definitely be progressing to Math 125. Students do not need this course for Math 121. Normally students need not take Math 112 and 113, or Math 115 if they do not intend to take Calculus.
MATH 115 Precalculus Algebra and Trigonometry. Combining Math 112 and Math 113, this course is designed for students who are capable of handling an extremely fast track into Math 125. Normally students need not take Math 112 and 113, or Math 115 if they do not intend to take Calculus.
MATH 121 Calculus and Its Applications. This course is designed for students in C & BA who do not specifically need Math 125 for future graduate work. C&BA students in Finance or Economics who plan to go to graduate school should take Math 125
Calculus Courses - These are not Introductory Math Courses
MATH 125 Calculus. This is the first of three courses in the basic calculus sequence.
MATH 131 Calculus I for the Integrated Curriculum. This course requires Math placement score of 44 or higher. It integrates one variable differential and integral calculus with concurrent courses in engineering with intensive use of advanced mathematics software.

Core Curriculum Requirement for Mathematics
Unless a student's major department requires a different course, a student can satisfy the core requirement for mathematics by taking Math 110. A student may choose to take any higher level mathematics course (Math 112 and up) that they are qualified to take, but careful consideration should be exercised when doing this.
