Spring 2013


January 7, 2013: Degree Works Training – Degree Works training will continue at the individual department/school level for the Spring semester 2013. Academic departments and schools should contact Pat Gebhart at 304-696-2265 to schedule Degree Works Training Sessions.

January 24-25, 2013: Education Advisory Board, Student Success Collaborative Non-Pilot program training – This training will focus on three non-pilot programs already identified—Journalism and Mass Communication, College of Business, and the College of Fine Arts. However, advisors from pilot programs (Computer Science, Engineering, Biology, Nursing, Psychology, English, Education, and University College) and other non-pilot programs are invited to attend to learn about the collaborative tool and how it works in combination with Degree Works.

January 31, 2013: Public Agenda Research Focus Groups and Interviews – Dr. John Immarwahr, faculty at Villanova University in philosophy and Senior Research & Public Engagement Fellow for Public Agenda, will conduct interviews and facilitate focus groups with invited faculty and students as part of Marshall’s participation, as the HLC institution, in the Public Agenda research on the Lumina Foundation’s Degree Qualifications Profile.

February 1, 2013: Higher Learning Commission and Lumina Foundation Quality Initiative Activity 3 – Departments and Schools are asked to complete steps 1, 2, 3 and part of 4 of Activity 3 by February 1st, 2013.

  • Step 1: Enter your college and program missions, with short explanations regarding how your program’s mission supports those of your college and Marshall University.
  • Step 2: Enter your program’s learning outcomes. For each outcome, list courses (or other learning activities) and specific assessments you will conduct in each, and benchmarks for each assessment point.
  • Step 3: Enter rubrics for each learning outcome.
  • Step 4: Record results of the assessment (conducted in Fall 2012) of two learning outcomes. Analyze results and recommend planned actions based on this analysis.

February 27 – March 1, 2013: Higher Learning Commission, Open Pathways Demonstration Project Workshop, Cohort 3 Pioneer Institutions Meeting – Chicago, Illinois. Cohort Institutions will report on progress in testing the Lumina Degree Qualifications Profile, develop outline for final report due July 1, 2013, and preview HLC Pathways Accreditation Assurance System.

May 17, 2013: Higher Learning Commission and Lumina Foundation Quality Initiative Activity 3 – Departments and schools are asked to record results of the assessment (conducted in Spring 2013) of all learning outcomes not assessed during Fall 2012. Also, units should analyze results and recommend planned actions based on this analysis.

Academic Affairs will conduct a series of workshops to support completion of Activity 4. These will unveil a new data collection system that should streamline data collection within each academic unit. Details of the workshops (dates and times) will be announced shortly.
