Workshops offered by the Learning Resource Center

Each semester the Learning Resource Center offers 13 scheduled workshops. These are taught in a hands-on computer lab using Windows7/Office 2007. Student may bring a laptop if desired. We are happy to help students on Macintosh computers in the LRC. Many other workshops are taught in departments, classes, and at the regional campuses upon request. Regrettably, due to recent budget cuts, there will be no workshops offered during the spring 2012 term.

Week 1 - Computer Operations Basics:
This workshop will introduce students to the basic operations of a PC running the Microsoft Windows 7 operating system.  Students will learn how to trouble-shoot many of the problems that arise with day-to-day functioning of a PC.  Updates and virus protection available to UConn students will also be covered.

Week 2- Using the Internet for UConn students:
This workshop will introduce students to the basics using of the internet wisely to accomplish their academic assignments.  This workshop will cover managing the NetID, UConn’s virtual privacy network, privacy, and browser settings.

Week 3 - HuskyCT:
This workshop will introduce students to some of the “dashboard” features in HuskyCT; the course management software used by instructors and students at UConn.  As time allows, more advanced features will also be explored.

Week 4 - Effective E-Communication:
This workshop will explore email (specifically UConn’s Google Apps for Education), attachments, HuskyCT discussion postings, chat rooms, and other kinds of e-communications that students use toward their academic success.

Week 5 - Advanced Academic Word Processing:
This workshop (based primarily upon UConn's Google Docs) will aid students with the formatting skills necessary to submit a high-quality research paper.  Footnotes, endnotes, and other features will be covered. Collaborative features in this powerful text editor will also be covered.

Week 6 - ePortfolio:
ePortfolio is a secure, password-protected on-line digital storage portfolio for students to collect and reflect upon their academic experience.  Students collect academic artifacts over their academic career and share them with anyone who has email and internet access.  Come learn how to use this powerful tool.

Week 7 - Presentation Software:
You haven’t been asked to give a class presentation either individually or as a small group yet?  Chances are you will soon!  Come learn about the powerful presentation tools built into UConn's Google Apps for Education (and also how not to overuse them).  We will also talk about the basics of preparing and delivering a presentation that keeps you in control.  Collaborative feature in this presentation tool will also be covered.

Week 8 - StudentAdmin (SAS):
This workshop will explore some of the more advanced features in UConn’s web-based student records system.  Students will learn how to run and interpret their degree progress reports and advanced search features.

Week 9 - Spreadsheets:
Spreadsheets provide a way to view and manipulate large amounts of data without creating a database.  This workshop will explore sorting and formula creation in UConn's Google Apps for Education.  This is an excellent precursor to the database workshop.

Week 10 - Introduction to Databases:
This introduction takes students through the basics of tables, queries, forms, and reports.  Students will use the “wizard” tools in MS Access 2007 and make minor modifications. Please make an appointment for instruction in Filemaker Pro.

Week 11 - Intermediate Databases:
This intermediate level session takes students through tables, queries, forms, and reports while building upon the basics.  Students will create in MS Access 2007 and make minor modifications.  Students who have had some experience with MS Access 2007 may skip the introduction and sign up directly for this workshop. Please make an appointment for instruction in Filemaker Pro.

Week 12 - Introduction to Paint.Net
This hands-on workshop introduces students to the basics of a free image editing software called Paint.Net. Please make an appointment for instruction in Windows Movie Maker or iMovie.

Week 13 - Intermediate Paint.Net
This hands-on workshop takes students beyond the basics of Paint.Net and builds upon the skills learned in the introductory workshop.  Students with some experience with image editing may register for this workshop without taking the introduction.  Please make an appointment for instruction in Windows Movie Maker or iMovie.
