Staying in Shape

For those who like to maintain a regular fitness regimen, the campus has plenty to offer. The University Quad, which is ¼ mile in circumference, is a popular jogging and walking spot most mornings and evenings.

If you need a little more scenery, most of the campus area and downtown Tuscaloosa are equipped with wide, clean sidewalks ideal for fitness buffs. The University Recreation Center (205-348-1347 or urec.sa.ua.edu) located just off Campus Drive on the east end of campus, also maintains an indoor track exclusively for joggers and walkers.

In addition to its fully stocked weight room and its basketball, racquetball, tennis, swimming and sauna facilities, the Recreation Center also offers a wide variety of fitness classes – from aerobics to kickboxing to yoga. For more information about fitness classes, contact the Fitness Center at 205-348-5161 or urec.sa.ua.edu.

The Recreation Center sponsors numerous intramural sports, from flag football and basketball to table tennis and bowling. Contact the Intramural Sports office at 205-348-3906 or urec.sa.ua.edu for more information.

Although the University maintains swimming facilities at the Recreation Center, swimmers also may exercise at the Aquatic Center (UAC) (205-348-6155 or urec.sa.ua.edu), which features an Olympic-size and a 25-yard pool, a weight room, and diving facilities. Commonly referred to as the “Nat” (short for Natatorium), the UAC is open as early as 6 a.m. on weekdays and is free for University students with a valid ACTion card. Classes in swimming, water safety, and lifeguard duties are also available at the Aquatic Center–located at the corner of Bryant Drive and Hackberry Lane– throughout the year.

The 18-hole University Golf Center (UGC) and driving range–located a few miles east of campus off University Boulevard–opens at 7 a.m. most mornings and offers discounted greens fees for students. Contact the UGC at 205-348-7041.

Student Health

The Russell Student Health Center (RSHC) (205-348-6262), located at the corner of University Boulevard and Hackberry Lane, provides 24-hour first aid care and daily minor medical consultation and treatment. The RSHC also maintains the University of Alabama Women’s Resource Center (205-348-5040), which offers treatment and counseling for a number of women’s health issues.

Students may have the costs of Russell Student Health Center visits, minor medical procedures, and most prescriptions applied to their student accounts. However, major medical procedures and prescriptions may require the care of an outside hospital or physician. The University of Alabama Health Services Foundation provides medical insurance for students through the RSHC Insurance Office. For more information, contact the insurance office at 205-348-2158 or review their website at http://www.cchs.ua.edu/shc/insurance/eligibility.
