America Rising Scholarship
This scholarship is supported by the Foundation’s overall fundraising activities through the generosity of LaGuardia Community College’s faculty, staff, retirees and alumni, as well as growing support from private individuals, philanthropic foundations and businesses. Gifts to the America Rising Scholarship Fund have been able to assist hundreds of students in meeting the financial demands of a college education.
Arlene Kahn Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was created and continues to be supported by the family, friends and colleagues of Dr. Arlene Kahn, who served as the Director of the Office of School-College Collaborations for LaGuardia Community College from 1990 to 2005. “Arlene Kahn was dedicated to the proposition that all students have the ability to thrive and achieve when afforded the opportunities enjoyed by the more privileged. She embodied the spirit of College Now from its inception, and for 18 years.” Carolyn Henner-Stanchina, Coordinator of College Now.
Additional eligibility requirements:
The Arlene Kahn Scholarship is open to high school graduates who have taken at least one college-credit-bearing course through LaGuardia’s COLLEGE NOW program, and who have chosen to attend LaGuardia Community College upon graduation.
Audrey Harrigan/COPE Scholarship
This scholarship was named for Audrey Harrigan, now retired from LaGuardia, who directed the College Opportunity to Prepare for Employment (COPE) Program that provides support to students receiving public assistance. Under her leadership, this program was engaged in research studies that documented the advantages of welfare reform to foster education and employment training of public assistance recipients.

Applicants must be enrolled in the COPE Program.
Barnes & Noble College Booksellers Scholarship
This tuition-based scholarship is sponsored by Barnes and Noble College Book Sellers in support of LaGuardia Community College students with financial needs who are pursuing a college degree.
Bernard and Sade Pollack Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was created in 2008 in memory of Bernard Pollack, LaGuardia ‘89, and his wife Sade, by their family and friends. Bernard Pollack attended LaGuardia Community College after retiring and graduated at the age of 72, with the unflagging support and encouragement of his wife, Sade Pollack. The scholarship supports adult students who are pursuing a college degree.
Additional eligibility requirement:
Full-time students of non-traditional age for a college student.
CUNY Campaign Faculty and Staff Scholarship
This scholarship was established through the generous support of LaGuardia faculty and staff members from their participation in the CUNY Campaign and the Faculty and Staff Campaign.
Additional eligibility requirement:
Applicants must have 45 credits or more. Part-time students will also be considered.
J. Bert Morgan & Wayne Logsdon Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was created in memory of the father and father-in-law of Robert C. Morgan, LaGuardia Foundation Honorary Board Member, retired partner in the Law Firm of Ropes and Gray, and a dedicated supporter of the College and its students.
Joe Shenker Endowed Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship was created in memory of Dr. Joseph Shenker, Founding President of LaGuardia Community College, with support from the New York Community Trust and friends of Dr. Shenker.
Judy and Victor Farkas Scholarship
This scholarship was created in honor of the parents of Susan Farkas, a supporter of LaGuardia Community College.
Additional eligibility requirements:
Applicants must maintain a G.P.A. of 3.2 or higher and must be enrolled in the Honors Program.
Kathryn Morgan Scholarship Fund
This scholarship was created in memory of the mother of Robert C. Morgan, LaGuardia Foundation Honorary Board Member, retired partner in the Law Firm of Ropes and Gray, and a dedicated supporter of the College and its students.
Keith Coote Endowed Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was created in memory of Keith Coote, a LaGuardia student who died in a work-related accident at LaGuardia airport in the early 1990s. As a student at LaGuardia, Keith struggled with math, but with skilled tutoring he received his first “A” in math before he died.
Additional eligibility requirement:
Full-time students in good standing who have demonstrated significant academic accomplishment and/or academic improvement in math. Selection will be made in conjunction with the Math Department.
Khym Foundation Scholarship
The Khym Foundation, which sponsors this scholarship, is keenly interested in supporting college-level students who are economically disadvantaged, and demonstrate their commitment to striving for a better future through their college work.
Additional eligibility requirement:
Applicants must have a minimum 3.0 G.P.A.
Spring Into Action Scholarship
In 2009, The LaGuardia Community College Foundation launched “Spring Into Action,” a fundraising campaign designed to award numerous, immediate, $3,500 scholarships to new and returning students. A gift of $3,500 covers the tuition costs of an in-state student for an entire academic year, or an international or out-of-state student’s tuition costs for one semester.
Susan Blandi Memorial Scholarship
This endowed scholarship was created and continues to be supported through the fundraising efforts of the family, friends and colleagues of Susan Blandi, who served as the Director of Marketing for LaGuardia Community College’s Urban Center for Educational Development from 1988 to 2005.
“Susan Blandi’s passion for living was infectious. Urbane and cosmopolitan, Susan cared about people and was concerned about social and political injustice.” Mimi Blaber, Director, CUNY Immersion Program.
Additional eligibility requirement:
LaGuardia Community College Adult and Continuing Education (ACE) students who have matriculated into a degree program at LaGuardia, or current ACE students who have demonstrated exceptional performance in pursuit of their educational goals. Preference will be given to students with an interest in theater or the arts.
WAC Lighting Company Scholarship
Sponsored by WAC Lighting, a leader in the field of decorative residential and commercial interior lighting, this scholarship supports education of LaGuardia students, many of whom are immigrants or children of immigrants. Tai Wang, a LaGuardia Foundation Honorary Board member and owner of WAC Lighting, is a dedicated supporter of LaGuardia, its programs and students.
Former Foundation Treasurer Peter Koo, now a New York City Council member, created this scholarship in memory of his father, and in 2007 pledged an additional $100,000 over 5 years to expand his support for LaGuardia students studying the health professions. Mr. Koo owns Starside Drugs Pharmacy, a chain of drugstores based in Queens, and is also President of the Flushing Chinese Business Association.
Additional eligibility requirement:
Applicants must be studying for a career in health care, with a minimum G.P.A. of 2.5. Preference may be given to Chinese students, however, this scholarship is not restricted by race, gender or ethnicity.
This scholarship is sponsored by the White Castle Company, a hamburger restaurant chain. White Castle is “always proud to support programs with the power to impact people.”
