New Start Program
The New Start Program, established in 1985, was developed to assist students who had experienced academic difficulty at the senior college level. Students in the program are offered specialized counseling and targeted academic advisement designed to assist them in overcoming previous difficulties and working towards academic success at Kingsborough. New Start Counselors are available to give students individualized assistance during their time at KCC and provide transfer counseling after graduation.

Carly A. Sheck Success Story

After getting academically dismissed from Hunter College in the spring of 2004, I decided to apply to KBCC's New Start program. For one year, I took the train two hours each way to travel from my apartment in northwest Queens to KBCC in southeast Brooklyn. At KBCC, the New Start counselors were incredibly nice and helpful, something I did not experience at Hunter. My classes were relatively smaller than at Hunter, and staff was much friendlier and took the time to know me and assist me any way that they could. The overall atmosphere at KBCC was completely different from Hunter and I am so happy that I got the opportunity to attend KBCC from Fall 2004 to Spring 2005.

In those two semesters I earned 30 credits from KBCC and graduated with my A.A. in Liberal Arts with a GPA of 3.89. I was readmitted back into Hunter College, took extra classes and was able to earn my B.A. in Spring 2006. I applied to the Hunter College Urban Affairs Masters Program and earned my Masters degree, an M.S. in Urban Affairs/Policy Analysis in August of 2007.

For the past eight months now I have been working for the City of New York, at the Department of Social Services, as a Policy Analyst/Senior Project Manager. I'll never forget the day when my counselor at Hunter told me that I was academically dismissed and that there was nothing that I could do to come back. KBCC and the New Start program helped me get my education and life back on track. My father always told me that all he wanted was to see me in a cap and gown holding a college degree. Luckily he got to see me graduate from KBCC in June 2005, unfortunately he passed away, unexpectedly two months later, and was unable to see me graduate with my B.A. and my M.S. It helps to know that my father at least knew that I was back on track and saw me earn my A.A.

I am so thankful for KBCC and the New Start program. Now just three years after graduating from KBCC I have earned two more degrees and now work for the City earning more money than I thought I ever could at my age. I could not have accomplished any of these things without the assistance of KBCC and the New Start Program.
