As the only publicly supported graduate journalism school in the northeastern United States, the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism provides one of the best values in advanced journalism education. Still, we offer a rigorous, full-time academic program, and we recognize the challenges students face in paying for it.
Most rely on a combination of financial resources, including personal savings, family assistance, scholarships awarded by both the CUNY J-School and outside organizations, federal and state loans, and need-based financial aid.
The CUNY J-School also requires a summer internship of each student as part of its curriculum. Thanks to a generous grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, every student is guaranteed to receive a minimum of $3,000 per summer. This money is a unique benefit to CUNY J-School students that can further help to offset the cost of their education.
Our office works closely with students to put together a plan that will make it possible for them to finance full-time studies toward a graduate journalism degree. We also assist out-of-state residents in establishing New York State residency to be eligible for in-state tuition during the third and final term of the program.
