Application Instructions

Am I Eligible?
The Institute will enroll 20-25 students who: Are enrolled in a New York City Public School; Are entering the 11th or 12th grade in the 2014 school  year; Have a minimum GPA of 75;  Have an exemplary record of attendance.  

How Do I Apply?
Please submit the following: application form, high school transcript and essay. For further instructions regarding the essay please download the summer application form. Submit completed applications by May 24, 2014. If you have any questions regarding the application process contact the College Now Department.

Please note that applications are reviewed on a rolling basis so submit your applications as soon as possible.

The John Jay College of Criminal Justice College Now Program’s Law and Criminal Justice Summer Institute (CJSI) is designed to provide students with foundational knowledge of the American criminal justice system. Through classroom instruction, guest lectures and hands-on activities students learn the about the historical and contemporary workings of our criminal justice in practice. Students will also identify potential career pathways and learn how to acquire necessary training and educational credentials required for entry into specific criminal justice occupations. The overall objectives of the CJSI are as follows:

• To educate students about the challenges and responsibilities of criminal justice work;

• To enhance student interest in public service careers in criminal justice, law enforcement and public administration;

• To assist student in developing an individualized educational plan aimed at degree acquisition;

• To encourage students to pursue college-level educational training in criminal justice leading to public service careers;

• To increase students awareness of the many educational programming opportunities offered through John Jay based and CUNY-wide educational programming.

Program Activities
The CJSI is a five-week summer program housed at John Jay College of Criminal Justice for 20-25 NYC public high school students. The institute will meet from Monday, July 8th thru Thursday, August 8th, four days each week (M-TH) from 9:30 to 3:00pm each day.  Enrollment is open to rising 11th and 12th grade NYC public high school students who meet academic eligibility requirements. Successful students earn 3 college-credits upon satisfactory completion of the program.

The five-week program will include the following activities:

Classroom Instruction: Monday thru Thursday -9:30-12:00:
Each day, morning sessions will be comprised of classroom instruction in the 3-credit Introduction to Criminal Justice course. The overall goal of the course is to introduce students to the institutional framework through which criminal justice is dispensed and provide a foundational understanding of the American criminal justice system.

Criminal Law Workshop – Law-In-Focus Seminar: Monday/Wednesday- 1:00 to 3:00:
Each week, 2 afternoon workshop sessions will allow students to engage in an informed and critical discussion of contemporary issues in criminal justice practice. Students also benefit from the real world experiences of criminal justice professionals from federal and local law enforcement agencies and the courts. Seminar topics will include:

Stop and Frisk
The 4th Amendment
Crime Scene Investigations
The Rights of the Accused
Defense Function
The Prosecutorial Function
Federal Law enforcement

Criminal Law Workshop – Mock Trial: Tuesday/Thursday- 1:00 to 3:00:
2 afternoon sessions each-week will work through several mock trial scenarios. The scenarios are designed to be fun, engaging and to teach the rudiments of criminal trial procedure. Students play various roles in each case scenario including jurors, witnesses, bailiff, defense counsel, prosecutor, and defendant. Youth Mentor/Coaches lead teams in preparation for in-class competitions.

Eligibility Requirements
The 20- 25 institute enrolleeswill be selected from qualified applicants from NYC public high schools. To qualify for the program, students must:

• Submit a completed CJSI Application form;
• Enter the 11th or 12th grade in the Fall 2014;
• For juniors, a minimum English GPA of 85 or an ELA score of 75 or higher;
• For seniors, a minimum ELA score of 75.
