"Timely" Emergency Warning Procedures

Timely Warning Requirements

Campus wide timely warnings are provided to give students, faculty, and staff timely notification of crimes and other events that may represent a serious or ongoing threat to the campus community and to heighten safety awareness. This communication is prepared as part of the Timely Warning requirement of the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Crime Statistics Act of 1990, Jeanne Clery Act 20 USC 1092F) et Seq.

The Public Safety Department is responsible for issuing a timely warning when a crime is reported to or brought to the attention of the Public Safety Department or other college authorities, and that crime represents a serious or ongoing threat to the safety of members of the college community. Information for timely warnings may also come from other law enforcement agencies. Every attempt will be made to issue the warning after the incident as soon as possible.

Warnings are created by the combined efforts of the Public Safety Department, the President, Chief Operating Officer, and Vice President for Administration and Finance, and are distributed by the Public Safety Department.

The Public Safety Department may prepare a timely warning whenever a report is received of a violent crime against a person, a substantial crime against property or an emergency situation on or near one of our campuses that represents a serious or ongoing threat to the safety of students, faculty and staff. Crimes which a timely warning may be issued are, but not limited to; murder, manslaughter, sex offenses, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary, arson, motor vehicle theft, and illegal weapons possession.

Timely Warnings typically include the following information, if known:

  • Statement of the incident, the nature and severity of threat, locations and persons who might be affected.
  • Any connection to previous incidents.
  • Physical description and or composite drawing of suspect.
  • Appropriate safety tips.

Anyone with information warranting a Timely Warning should report the circumstances to Public Safety by phone or in person at all campuses:

Main Campus: 212-772-4444
Campus: 212-481-4444
School of Social Work: 212-452-7080
Campus High School:
MFA/Voorhees Campus: 212-629-5130

In the event that a situation arises, either on or off campus, that, in the judgment of the Director of Public Safety, constitutes an ongoing threat, a campus wide “timely warning” will be issued and distributed by:

  • Posting on electronic bulletin boards
  • CUNY Alert text messaging
  • Posted at all security posts
  • Door to door notification
  • Campus media, radio, newspaper
  • News release
  • Public Safety website
