MA in History (30 credits)

Our M.A. in History allows students to develop a comprehensive program of study focusing on one of the following four areas.

  • United States to 1876
  • United States since 1860
  • Europe
  • Comparative World History

The Program of Study

Students entering the program will work with their assigned advisors to create a planned program of study tailored to their interests and goals. Program requirements include:

  • HIST 501: The Professional Historian (3 credits)
  • HIST 502: Historiography (3 credits)
  • 500-level courses in History (12 credits)
  • HIST 599: Thesis (6 credits)
  • Electives in history or related fields (6 credits)

In addition, MA in History candidates are required to demonstrate the ability to translate material in their field in one foreign language, except in those cases where, upon the request of a candidate in U.S. history, a substitute skill or subject is approved by the Department. Candidates must make application in the Department to take the language examination. Deadlines are October 10, for the fall examination; March 10, for the spring. Please note that this policy is subject to revision.
