The vast majority* of all first-year and second-year students will be advised by professional advisors in the Advising Center in Lanier Hall. Incoming transfer students will either begin with a professional advisor or a faculty member in their academic department, depending on the number of credit hours previously earned. Students will be served in the Advising Center up to the accumulation of approximately 45 credit hours. Once the student is approaching 45 earned credits, he or she will then be connected to a faculty member in the academic department of the major. The faculty advisor will then help the student navigate the upper division degree requirements as the student continues in the junior and senior years, progressing toward degree completion and graduation.
*Due to unique aspects of our Music, Music Therapy and Outdoor Education programs, new students in those majors will be advised by faculty members in those departments. If an incoming students is not informed regarding his or her advisor assignment, he or she should contact the Advising Center in Lanier Hall.
The four Grade Point Averages (GPA) are Institutional, Transfer, Current and Overall GPA. While these four GPA categories are listed, only the Institutional GPA and Current GPA appear on your official transcript. In addition, your official transcript will contain the Cumulative GPA that calculates all grades of courses taken at Georgia College – including any repeated courses.
The Institutional GPA is calculated using all grades received on Georgia College coursework. For courses that are repeated, only the last grade received is included in the calculation. The Institutional GPA (along with your overall earned credit hours) is used to determine your academic standing as well as your eligibility for graduation. The minimum GPA you must have for graduation is 2.00. This is the GPA that appears on an official transcript.
The Transfer GPA is calculated on all classes taken outside of Georgia College. This GPA does not appear on a transcript.
The Overall GPA is calculated from a combination of your Institutional GPA and Transfer GPA. This GPA does not appear on a transcript.
The Current GPA is calculated from the grades received for a specific term. The current GPA appears after each term on a transcript.

When students are admitted to Georgia College, an advisor hold is placed on their record to prevent them from registering for classes without the approval of their academic advisor. This is to insure that students share a dialogue with their advisors to gain accurate information about the selection of appropriate courses and other educational interests and requirements. The Advisor Hold will usually return to the students' record at the end of the drop/add period. This will encourage a student/advisor communication each semester prior to the registration period.
Georgia law requires that each candidate for a degree from a University System of Georgia institution demonstrate knowledge of the history and constitution of the United States and Georgia by course work or examination.
U.S. and Georgia Constitution Requirements
The U.S. and Georgia constitution requirements are usually satisfied by earning a passing grade in POLS 1150 or equivalent at a University System school and some non-System Georgia schools. Students who take political science at other institutions or who have AP credit for American government satisfy the U.S. constitution requirement, but they must pass a Georgia constitution test through the Government and Sociology Department.
U.S. and Georgia History Requirements
Both of these requirements can be satisfied by earning a passing grade in HIST 2111 or HIST 2112 (U.S. History) or their equivalents taken at another University System of Georgia institution or by passing the U.S. and Georgia history examinations. Transfer students who bring credit for the U.S. history course from a non-University System of Georgia institution have satisfied the U.S. portion of the requirement but not the Georgia history portion. Similarly, passing the Advanced Placement Program tests for U.S. History will satisfy the U.S. requirement but not the Georgia requirement. The Georgia history requirement can be satisfied by passing HIST 4415 or by passing the Georgia history examination.
Students who choose to take the U.S. and Georgia history tests instead of one of the approved courses must contact the Center for Testing in Lanier Hall to register for one of the scheduled testing dates (generally twice monthly during fall and spring semesters-see Testing Calendar for dates). To make sure that the requirement is satisfied in a timely manner, students are encouraged to take the tests in their freshman or sophomore years, or for transfer students, as soon as possible after transfer. Students should register early for their preferred test dates because test sessions may fill up. Only one test may be taken in a test session. Students will be allowed no more than four attempts at the Georgia History exam and four attempts at the U.S History exam. After the 4th attempt, students will be required to pass HIST 2111 or HIST 2112 to satisfy the requirement for Georgia History and U.S. History. Students who are registered for HIST 2111 or HIST 2112 will not be allowed to sign up for the U.S. or Georgia History test during the semester they are taking the course.
All undergraduate degree candidates must complete a Senior Exit requirement in their major field of study during one of their last two semesters prior to the completion of degree requirements. This requirement is determined by the major department and may be an examination, a portfolio, completion of a course, or other method of assessment. Students who are required to take a test should check with the Center for Testing, Lanier Hall, to determine the type of test, application procedures and deadlines required for their majors. These students are encouraged to register for the exam the semester before they plan to test. Timely inquiry, correct application, and registration are the responsibility of the student. The Senior Exit requirement is an important part of the student's participation in assessing institutional effectiveness and fostering program improvement. Results of exit requirements will be part of the student's official Georgia College record.
A student can drop a science lecture but stay in a lab, and vice versa. To register for the lab or the class only, go to the appropriate department and get an override to register for only the lab or the class.

- In general, Georgia College requires a score of three or higher on tests administered in conjunction with the Advanced Placement (AP) Program of the College Entrance Examination Board. However, some subjects require a score of 4 or higher. Advanced Placement Credit Table
- The earlier grade at Georgia College is always replaced by the latter grade. So if a student repeats a class, the last one is the one that is counted. Classes re-taken at other institutions don't change the grade earned at Georgia College.
- If a student is going to take one semester at another college (e.g., summer session closer to home), they must complete a Transient Permission Form to inform Georgia College of the course they'll be taking.
