International students in F-1 or J-1 visa status are eligible to work on campus under certain limitations. International students are limited to working part-time (20 hours a week or less) while school is in session and may work full-time during school breaks. Students should refer to the International Education Center's summary information regarding working in the U.S. and contact the International Center for more information about employment restrictions and maintaining immigration status.
On-campus jobs pay minimum wage, and taxes may be deducted from a student's paycheck. While many international students work on campus, it is not always easy to find jobs on campus, especially during the first semester of enrollment, and often difficult to work the maximum of 20 hours. Some examples of places where international students work on campus are the cafeteria, catering services, the library, computer labs and the bookstore. Students should not depend on on-campus employment as a source of income when planning their finances.
