Georgia College offers a number of choices for on-campus living, from the traditional residence hall on main campus to apartment-style living at The Village. Living on campus is a good way to make friends and to adjust to life at the university. First-Year Housing Requirement
All new freshmen (first-year undergraduates with less than 12 credit hours of university coursework) are required to live in University Housing during their first year of study at Georgia College. If you are a freshman who is 21 years of age or older, you can request an exemption from the housing requirement. Any request for an exemption must be made in writing to the Director of University Housing at least 30 days prior to the start of the semester in which you plan to enroll. All halls are located on main campus and provide study areas, recreation rooms, laundry facilities, kitchens and computer stations. All rooms are equipped with telephone, Internet and cable television access. Typically, two students share a room and four students share a bathroom in what are known as "suite-style" residence halls. There are a limited number of private rooms, where students have their own room and share a bathroom with one other student. There is a common kitchen/living room area in each residence hall that all residents in that building share.
Space is limited so interested students need to apply as soon as they are accepted to the university. Room assignments are made based on the date applications are received, with priority given to first-year undergraduates. Those required to live on campus who have not reserved University Housing in advance will not be permitted to enroll.
It is important to understand the terms and conditions of living in a University Residence Hall. The full contract and housing handbook are available here. Students are required to sign a contract for the entire academic year (fall and spring semesters), with exceptions made for one-semester exchange students. Please note that during Winter Break (between fall and spring semesters), residence halls close; however, it is possible for Sanford Hall residents to remain in their hall during the break for a fee.
To reserve a room in a Residence Hall, apply on-line through your PAWS account (instructions available at University Housing). Please note that the confirmation deposit and housing deposit are waived for international applicants, but you must notify the International Center at the time of your housing application so the fee waiver can be processed.
All freshmen living in a residence hall are required to purchase a meal plan. If you are unsure which meal plan to choose, we suggest that you select the smallest meal plan available because you may increase your meal plan at any time, but you cannot decrease it after the stated deadlines.

*Entering freshmen (first-year students) are required to purchase either the Unlimited Plan or the 14-Meal plan. All other students (transfer, exchange, graduate) are not required to purchase a meal plan and can elect to select any of the above options.
Dining Dollars can be used at any on-campus food service outlet (includes The Max, World of Wings, The Village Market, Chick-fil-A, Einstein's Bros. Bagels, Books & Brew Starbucks Cafe, Blimpie and Sandella's). CatCash can be used at any on-campus dining location, laundry facility, and computer lab, as well as participating off-campus merchants. Dining Dollars and CatCash carry forward each successive semester. Upon request, Dining Dollars and CatCash balances greater than $20 will be refunded in full upon graduation or official withdrawal from GC.
University Housing residents are required to pay a $25 social dues fee, which supports residence hall/apartment activities, prior to move-in each semester.
The Village at West Campus
The Village offers apartments that come fully furnished with many amenities. All utilities are included in the price, including local telephone access, cable TV connection and high-speed Internet connection. Also available at The Village are laundry facilities, a pool, tennis courts and a club house. You have the choice between a 2-bedroom or 4-bedroom apartment. In either case, you would have your own bedroom and would share a common living room area, kitchen and bathroom with either one other or three other students.
You can apply for The Village on-line through your PAWS account (instructions available at University Housing). Please note that the application fee and deposit are waived for international applicants, but you must notify the International Center at the time of your housing application so the fee waiver can be processed. When you submit an application to The Village, you are signing a contract to stay in the apartment for the entire 12-month period from August to July (unless you are an exchange student who is coming to GC for only one semester). Village residents are charged once a semester for a 6-month period (exchange students for a 5-month period).

The Village is located approximately two miles from main campus, so it is not within walking distance to campus. However, there is a regular shuttle service that runs between The Village and main campus. The apartments can be a convenient option to arrange for many new students (especially since students do not need to worry about finding other roommates to share an apartment with or trying to arrange with different utility companies for water, power, etc.), though some international students who don't have cars prefer to live within walking distance to campus and others prefer to find less-expensive alternatives. While off-campus living can be somewhat cheaper than university housing, remember that utilities are usually arranged separately from the rental fee, and you must take them into account when making comparisons.
General Housing Information
Locating Housing: Students can check the " yellow pages" of the local telephone directory for a complete listing of apartments in the Milledgeville area. Students can also look in the classifieds section of the Union Recorder Milledgeville newspaper and other local newspapers for listings, and check postings on Facebook, their email accounts, and bulletin boards/signs around campus. It may also be a good idea to contact currently enrolled international students for suggestions. Because there is no public transportation in Milledgeville, students need to make sure they secure housing within walking distance of the campus, or make other arrangements for transportation.
Requirements, Rights and Responsibilities: Often apartment contracts ("leases") are for one year only. Usually, tenants are required to pay a deposit (often the equivalent of one month's rent), which will be returned at the end of the contract if no damages are found. Make sure to keep a copy of our lease and get all agreements in writing. You can access a booklet produced by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs entitled Questions Frequently Asked by Tenants and Landlords for further information.
Questions to Consider:
• Cost: How much is the monthly rent? Are any utilities included in the cost of the rent, or do you need to pay those separately? (Generally, tenants will be required to pay at least some of the utilities separately, but some leases include the utilities such as water/garbage collection.)
• Deposit: How much security deposit is required? (Most leases will require a security deposit upfront at the time of signing the contract. Usually the deposit is equivalent to one month's rent. Unless you break the contract or cause any damages to the apartment, you should receive the security deposit back when you vacate the apartment at the end of your lease.)
• Location: Is it within walking distance to Georgia College? Is it in a safe, well-lit location? (Please note that there is no public transportation within Milledgeville, so you need to make sure the apartment is within walking distance, unless you plan to have a car or make other transportation arrangements.)
• Furniture: Does the apartment come furnished or unfurnished? (Most apartments will include appliances such as a refrigerator and stove. However, many apartments are unfurnished and you would be required to supply your own bed, chairs, table, desk, etc.)
• Terms of Lease: How long is the lease? (Often leases are 12 months in length.)
• Number of Rooms / Roommates: Are you renting a room within an apartment or the entire apartment? Do you have your own bathroom/bedroom? If you plan to share the apartment with other roommates, does the apartment owner assign you roommates or do you need to find your own? Does each roommate sign an individual lease, or is there one lease for the apartment?
• Facilities: Is a clothes washer/dryer included in the apartment or in the apartment complex? Is there a pool? exercise room?, etc.
• Utilities: Apartment rent often does not include all the utility costs, such as water, electricity, telephone, etc. Check with your landlord to see if any utilities are included in the rent. Be prepared for extra start-up costs and/or deposits required to turn on utilities. Some companies also charge higher deposits for those who have no credit history in the United States.
Vacating: Georgia law and most leases require that a tenant notify the landlord (preferably in writing) 30 days before vacating the premises. The apartment should be left clean, including the refrigerator and oven. At the time you vacate, do not leave anything behind and surrender your keys immediately. When you vacate, you must call each utility company and order the service disconnected or be responsible for usage after you leave. You must give a forwarding address for final bills or go in person to close these accounts.
