Middle Grades
Essential characteristics of the Georgia College undergraduate programs are the cohort model; extensive field-based programs; integrated, cross-disciplinary course work; and preparation in technology. The curriculum and the field experiences prepare teacher candidates to address the human relations and diversity issues of the public schools. The teacher education programs are organized in cohorts with mentor leaders. A cohort is a group of students who begins and ends a program at the same time. The teacher candidates take courses together. Providing program offerings in cohort groups enhances the opportunities for developing collaboration that will eventually apply to school and community.
B.S. in Middle Grades Education
The Middle Grades Education program is designed to prepare prospective teachers of children in grades 4-8. In addition to field placements in elementary and middle school classrooms throughout the two years in the program, teacher candidates will take courses to support two areas of concentration: English/language arts and your choice of either science, mathematics, or social science.
Admission into Middle Grades Education
Professional courses are primarily taken in the third and fourth years. After being officially accepted to Georgia College, students must apply before the third Friday in January to be accepted into a College of Education teacher education program beginning the next fall. Cohort application packets are available online in October, and acceptance is competitive.
Admission Requirements
- Cohort Application Form
- Three professional letters of recommendation in GC format
- Official copies of all transcripts if applicant has attended another college/university
- Minimal GPA of 2.5
- Passing scores or exemption on the GACE Basic Assessment
- Completion of Core areas before cohort begins in the fall
- Area F in Core completed with C or higher in each course
- Passing Regents’ Reading and Writing requirements or proof of exemption
- Clear background check
- Verified structured experience with children the level you wish to teach, recommended
- Satisfactory completion of interview by faculty admissions committee
In order to be considered for admissions, students must be on track to complete their general education courses (core or an appropriate associate's degree) by fall, have a minimum GPA of 2.5, and have passed or exempted the GACE Basic Assessment. They must also complete an application packet.
