Reading, Literacy & Language (M.Ed.)

This degree is available at the Macon Center, but some courses may be offered on the Milledgeville Campus. This program will have a number of blended courses, consisting of several face-to-face sessions as well as online components.

The Master of Reading, Literacy & Language degree at Georgia College offers extensive professional development in the field of literacy, involving reading, writing, language development, instruction, assessment and professional leadership. The foundation focuses on three primary areas: 
1) professional knowledge and practices in literacy development and instruction;
2) specialized training in assessment, interpretation of test scores and formulation of data-driven instructional programs; and
3) leadership and mentoring development.

The culmination of this degree will be eligibility for certification at Level 5 (T5) through the Georgia Professional Standards Commission. The program is aligned with the Georgia Professional Standards for Reading Specialist and the 2010 International Reading Association Standards for Reading Specialists.  

Graduates of the program will develop the knowledge and skills to provide leadership in the field of literacy within public schools to improve student achievement and academic performance.  

It is important to note that this program is designed specifically for individuals who already hold or qualify for a level four (4) Georgia Teacher's Certificate.

Admission Requirements

  3. Official copies of all transcripts
  4. Passing score on the College of Education Graduate Writing Assessment.  Effective Fall 2014, a passing score on the College of Education Graduate Writing Assessment or for admission purposes, applicants to COE graduate programs may submit official scores with the following minimums in lieu of passing the Graduate Writing Assessment : GRE – 1000 (Verbal and Quantitative combined) if taken prior to August 1, 2011, or 305 (Verbal and Quantitative Combined) if taken on or after August 1, 2011.  MAT – 400.  Applicants who have previously earned a baccalaureate or master’s degree from Georgia College, will automatically waive the application testing requirement without the need to petition.  Students who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate program at Georgia College, will have the testing requirement waived upon conferment of their baccalaureate degree.
    1. Minimal GPA of 2.75
    2. Verification of immunization
    3. Verification of Georgia T4 certification or evidence qualified for one 

The Graduate Writing Assessment (GWA) is waived for applicants who have previously earned a baccalaureate or master's degree from Georgia College.  Students who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate program at Georgia College will have the testing requirement waived upon conferment of their baccalaureate degree.

Possible areas of specialization:  Writing Project, ESOL, Special Education, Early Childhood (with Reading Endorsement), Middle & Secondary (with Reading Endorsement). Examples of additional courses:

Exit Requirement
All students are required to prepare and present an electronic exit portfolio to a faculty committee.  The portfolio includes narratives and artifacts that provide evidence of how students have met program standards.  Students will work with their advisor to develop their portfolios and to select the faculty committee.
