Clothesline
Georgia College Early College students prepare shirts for the annual clothesline project.  The Clothesline Project is displayed every October, during domestic violence awareness month.  Each shirt is created to bring awareness to the impact of violence towards women and children.

DanBauer
Drs. Linda Bradley and Dan Bauer have received a new grant from the National Writing Project in the amount of $20,000.  This is federal funding to support 2012-2013 SEED Teacher Leadership Development for the Central Georgia Writing Project.  Dr. Bradley will be the lead PI on the project and manage the funding.  The purpose of this grant is to build site leadership capacity for providing and sustaining professional development in the teaching of writing for teachers in Washington County. The grant is an investment in the development of a minimum of 20 teacher leaders in the 2012-2013 academic year and/or summer 2013.  The project is effective July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2013.

The College of Education's, Kilpatrick Education Center will be undergoing several architectural changes this fall.  Proposed renovation projects will be completed on public areas of the building first, such as the glass conference room and the back entrance staircase. [ more]

The National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and four Specialized Professional Associations (SPAs) recognized the following COE programs for national recognition:

• The Early Childhood Education program was recognized by NAEYC at the Initial and Advanced level.  We have the only SPA Advanced Level Recognition in the state.
• AMLE recognized our Middle Level Education program at the Initial and Advanced level.  We are one of three schools in Georgia to receive this distinction.
• CEC recognized our Special Education program at the Initial level.  We are one of five schools in Georgia to receive this distinction.
• ALA recognized our Library Media program at the Initial level.  We are one of three schools in Georgia to receive this distinction.

Alumni and senior education students shared their education experiences during the Then, Now, and Tomorrow Tea on February 5, 2013 in the Kilpatrick Atrium.

GCEC Homecoming
GC Early College crowned the first homecoming king and queen during a coronation ceremony on February 14, 2013 in the Magnolia Ballroom.  The 2013 GCEC king and queen are Alexis Hill, Jr. and Chiquita Cleveland (pictured).

The Student Professional Association of Georgia Educators (SPAGE) hosted an Ethics presentation on February 28, 2013 for CoE students.  Margaret Elliott, a PAGE attorney, spoke and answered questions about the Code of Ethics for Georgia Educators.  For more information about SPAGE click HERE.

NHD
Georgia College hosted the 2013 National History Day on March 1.  Middle and high school students from the surrounding counties presented on the theme - "Turning Points in History: People, Events, Ideas."

Four educators from the Cherokee County, North Carolina school district visited GC CoE from March 13-15, 2013.  These teachers currently work at project schools that have implemented a whole school reform model based in neuro-cognitive theory.  While here, they visited Dr. Marianne Edwards’s Exploring Teaching and Learning classes and presented their findings and demonstrated some strategies to the students.  Dr. Marcie Peck, Coordinator of Foundations, will be working with these schools in the fall.

Rob Sumowski

Dr. Rob Sumowski, Special Education professor, worked as an educational consultant for Stratford Academy’s educational component of ARISS science project, part of the NASA program. This project culminated in a live contact conversation between Stratford Academy students and Astronaut Chris Hadfield on the International Space Station on April 3, 2013.  The ten-minute conversation with the ISS involved an entire year of planning and coordination with NASA, amateur radio clubs across the country, and various educational entities. 

MiddleGradesCohort
The Middle Grades junior and senior cohorts hosted the Young Adolescent Creative Expression (YACE) celebration on April 12, 2013.  21 students from around middle Georgia, their families, teachers, principals and administrators where invited to spend an evening honoring the hard work and dedication the students put into their creative writing pieces chosen for the event.

Madison Bitzer, a junior Middle Grades major, received the Volunteer of the Year award during the Bobcat Award Ceremony this April.  The majority of Bitzer’s volunteer hours were acquired through her work with Lighthouse Family Retreat.
