Middle Grades Master of Arts in Teaching Science or Mathematics and Reading

The Middle Grades Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) Science and Mathematics degree (grades 4-8) provides initial teacher preparation at the master's degree level for qualified candidates who hold a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution. In order to qualify for the Georgia Middle Grades teaching certificate, candidates must have completed 15 semester hours in either science or 15 hours in mathematics. The core program is designed for college graduates whose undergraduate degrees did not include professional education preparation and is comprised of a minimum of 36 semester hours of graduate course work in professional education. Students who need content area coursework in order to complete certification requirements may take them in the semester prior to the start of the core program. Successful completion of the M.A.T. in Middle Grades Education (grades 4-8) leads to a T-5 Georgia Certification.
A distinctive feature of our M.A.T. program is the cohort concept. Candidates take all education classes with the same small group of students, learn as a team and become a support network for one another. Each cohort group has a Mentor Leader who serves as a support, instructor and supervisor for candidates in all their field placements.
A new cohort begins in Milledgeville every summer. All professional education courses are field-based, and students spend extensive time with host teachers in a variety of public school placements. Spring semester includes a ten-week, full-time student teaching internship.
The middle school concept, characteristics of the young adolescent learner, classroom inquiry, teaching diverse learners, and professional development as future leaders within the schools are concepts infused throughout all course work and field experiences.

Admissions Process
Admission to the Middle Grades MAT program is a two-step process. Students first apply for graduate admission to Georgia College. Once admitted to the University with graduate status, students then apply to the College of Education for admission to the MAT Middle Grades cohort. Admission to the cohort requires an in-person interview, which will be scheduled after the application is received.
